Sir Geoff’s verdict on Yaya Toure and Jack Wilshere

|
West Ham legend Sir Geoff Hurst has told the Daily Star of his disappointment that West Ham has been linked with Yaya Toure and Jack Wilshere as possible transfer targets.

“When I see them linked with Toure I just think that’s completely and utterly off the wall. I absolutely cannot believe as a club we’re looking at him. We bought the full-back – Ryan Fredericks – from Fulham which was terrific.

“But looking at Toure – with his comments about Pep Guardiola and the business with his birthday cake a few years ago – for West Ham to even think about talking to him is a very, very poor decision.

“There comes a time when a player is past his best and we shouldn’t be buying cast offs from other teams.”

“Wilshere is injury prone and you don’t want to sign players like that. We’ve already got Andy Carroll.

“Wilshere again for me is a complete no. There’s enough players in the world. West Ham don’t need to sign cast offs, injured players and players that are too old. For God’s sake surely we have enough money to buy a bit of quality.”

Well said Sir. Never has a true word been spoken. The thing I don’t get is all the hype and talk of these players we are linked with or talking to they never seem to pan out. What we need as fans is action not just talk.
Again I worry with preseason starting soon and only one player bought in.
With the manger on holiday the owners on holiday the new director of Football on holiday. When they all get back it may be to late other teams will have done there deals leaving us with the scraps or bargain basement players that nobody else wants. I hope I am wrong.

Totally agree, brilliant piece by a football man who wants the best for West Ham. I see we have received a bid for Obiang, I would accept that bid because I believe there are better players out there. However if you said to me who would I prefer, Obiang or Wilshere – it would be Obiang all day long. If anyone in the club think selling Obiang and replacing him with Wilshere is going to make us a better team then they are not football men and are not making the right decisions for West Ham. A friend of mine at Arsenal tells me the fans keep saying that his work rate is terrible, when the ball goes by him he is too slow to recover and the amount of goals Arsenal have conceded from this is unbelievable. Arsenal don’t want him, Bournemouth did not want him, we certainly do not want him.

Spot on, Sir Geoff! .. Couldn’t have put it better myself .. Moyes will have identified what needed doing and which players should leave and have replacements and improvements lined up .. In appointing Pellegrini, who started from scratch a good few weeks later, I think we may need to accept that the mess of the last two seasons will take two summer transfer windows to sort out .. A stress-free season will be a whole lot better than last season and then push on next summer .. We are lead to believe that West Ham have, is it, the 15th-20th largest budget in Europe, or something like that? .. We should NEVER be taking other clubs cast-offs in that case!! .. We should look to recruit young, hungry (and often cheaper) players who will regard signing for West Ham as a step-up .. Young, hungry players a bit better than Hughill mind! ..
