Steinberg criticises useless Hammers

The Guardian‘s Irons supporting Jacob Steinberg wasn’t shy in criticising West Ham‘s performance, calling them “useless” after falling behind 4-0 within 31 minutes at Selhurst Park. This feeble showing came just days after a Europa League quarter-final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Steinberg pointed to Aston Villa, who played 120 minutes and a penalty shootout in the Conference League just days before their convincing 3-1 victory over Bournemouth. This comparison highlighted West Ham’s lack of resilience, squad rotation and fitness.

Despite sitting eighth in the Premier League table, West Ham’s hopes of returning to Europe next season are fading. Their goal difference has taken a significant hit, putting them at a disadvantage compared to other contenders. Furthermore, teams around them are in better form, making the top-six chase an almost impossible battle.

And after being played off the park for a second London derby in a row, the week just gone may have dealt West Ham’s hopes of playing any football on the continent next season a fatal blow.

Only last week Jacob write an excellent piece whereby he described the ‘be careful what you wish for’ mantra as ‘unhelpful’ and stifling debate. . .  we couldn’t agree more.
