The Chicharito problem!

|

Hailed as the signing of the summer, Javier Hernandez has had a lean time at West Ham this season to the point where his summer exit is being freely discussed.

Here’s how ClaretandHugh’s followers feel about Chicharito’s future:

O Another striker disaster. It is still possible that Hernandez could be okay with a partner. Before his injury he scored a few, even in the shapeless shambles that was Bilic’s set up.

O No doubt he’s a top goal scorer and playing up top on your own is not easy. However, for me he doesn’t hassle enough.

O Chica  will never win headers or many contested balls in the area. His strength has always been feeding off the scraps the bigger players give him.  He definitely has a place in our team if we can play him with big Arnie and maybe Ayew or a new big man up front.

O Problem being we don’t play to Chic’s strengths. er, brought in individuals with no over-arching game plan or vision, so we’ve bits of three different jigsaws that just won’t fit.

O I think he’s a very good striker when playing with a strike partner. However we don’t, which was why I didn’t see him as a great signing as he can’t play that lone striker role.
O I’m not convinced Moyes is a fan of the player so I’d expect him to move on come the summer. I do rate him but he’s not a good fit for how we play sadly.
O Looking like another poor signing I’m sorry to say . That’s a shame as I really rate him .

I was hoping we had made a bit of a coup when signing Hernandes, especially after his time in Germany showed he could play as a team player after all.
Fox -in-the-Box is the term used, but does it mean anything in modern football? I have thought for quite a few years not. In 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1, it works ok but only in those formations. Most teams don’t play those formations any more. Most coaches see the necessity to have 2 holding players in midfield because of the over load of attacking flair players now used. That means it is almost impossible to use 2 out and out strikers. 3 attacking midfielders with one lone striker leading the line is now order of the day.
We have been playing Arnie alone up front with someone supporting him from deeper, and before that Antonio up front with Arnie supporting him from deeper. That has been our most effective formation.
Hernandes will find it hard to push into that situation, especially when he gets so pi22ed off that he stops trying during games. I can’t see him lasting long at West Ham, so I hope we make a good profit on him.
As for the fox in the box, I think it has finally been put in the box.

Didn’t everybody know he was a fox in the box ! Its what he was bought for ffs , he’s no sakho or Carroll and never will be , the problem is creating from midfield and not getting the balls into a area that he can finish ! He’s getting stick for the failures of others or more to the point not able to deliver the half chances he thrives on . even when he isn’t playing we have the same problem ! Our offensive and defensive m/f is the problem and until its put right were going to struggle ! The whole set up at present is defensive based , Moyes has said it as well as being not obvious ? Moyes is old school , its going to be interesting to see who he brings in to solve the problem but I’m not sure he’s of that pedigree for producing offensive displays which weve all been waiting for which now seems like a lost past when we were watching the likes of brooking , devo , benayoune, berkovitch , more , peters , tikka, di,canio, etc, where it all goes is a lottery at present , the question is surely can Moyes produce what west ham supporters want and can sugo finance it ? Maybe not 😕

Actually I think we’ve played a lot of good attacking football ( and not long ball ), with Arnie and Antonio in the team. But then they both are capable of playing as a lone striker, and work their knuts of for the team.
I agree what you say about the midfield. Get rid of the ineffective Obiang and Kouyate and we go a long way towards fixing that.

Unless the pea gets a start in the same team as Arnie , and Antonio , then he’s going to struggle , he was never bought for hustle and bustle was he , when he was brought in he was brought in to pick up the pieces because that’s what he does , I wouldn’t get rid of obiang or chiek but new blood in them areas are a must , its because we have a thin squad and depleted of quality and the under the surface problems which it seems are still going on that have a lot to do with the team , chiek in particular for whatever reason is not showing the right body language for me , I think he may want out ? Shrewsbury have played 4 games in 11 days and they were streets ahead of any we had on the pitch but that’s deviating from the pea debate , were struggling and confidence is playing a big part in the problem as well fishes , that’s why we need new blood but not panic buys or loans , but when you have sully pulling the strings we have another problem added to the cause , Moyes doesn’t fancy the pea anyway , IMO he will be gone in the summer if Moyes gets a contract extension ! We need depth and quality ! No matter who the manager was he was always going to struggle with what was available ! 😉

      this. +1

+1 can’t play 2 poachers up front w no creativity & expect goals. Cullen created best chance which Kouyate & Ayew both missed after first corner.
But I like Chic but Moyes I don’t think does & he has played best w Sahko the few times they played or play up front w Arnie but not Ayew.
We got players w no idea of how they fit & we still are screaming for more creativity which we lack badly. We play defensively Chic thrives in a more possession based game where chances are created we aren’t creating chances.
I know Laz will agree but others won’t I would hive Sakho a decent contract £40-£50k add ons of hit certain goals etc & just give him a year bc he is our most rounded CF don’t want to sell him to rival which is who wants him most in Jan willing to pay.
If I was him I’d want to go makes same as Ox at 19 & gets £35k off bench £50k to start. Had he started some games over Ayew as lone cf maybe he’d sign a new contract he is liked on dressing room helps with the kids. But him & Bilic didn’t get on he was Moyes go to Sub but did t start him.
Only rounded CF I see we could get is Mark Uth from Hoffemheim w only 6mo left 6’1 26yo well rounded CF w pace & good on the break but Moyes wants PL proven bc that always works out & rivals don’t want to sell us their players.

But issue w Chic is his wages I like him is a good finished but not a good loan striker especially playing hoof ball needs creators around him or ppl taking chances. I don’t see him going in Jan bc of wages.
And I agrss Laz Sakho might run is contract out so he can pick where he goes. He will stay make the Senegal team as Chic will Mexico. And rather then go to Russia he could pick France only way we get £15m for him is if we sell to Rival club.
And if he stays fine w me & bet Moyes will play him.

Sleeps and lazurus you are both spot on with your comments and you have saved me the time and trouble of writing mine. 👍

Over analysing a simple dilema . Hernandez is not a Premiership quality striker . He is to attack what Noble is to defence . Slow , can’t run , can’t head the ball ., can’t pass .He has never been a long term success anywhere and has been quickly moved on by good teams / managers . Get what we can for him and get rid . Sakho 10 times the threat he is and Martinez will prove much better if given a chance . Another awful bit of transfer business … does anyone any good on the international screen get sold for €15m … of course not . COYI .

    • bashammer11 says:

Sorry bubbles but i have to disagree with you.
Of course he is a quality striker worthy of most premiership teams.Just look at his goal ratios when playing for top clubs. He has scored 49 goals out of 99 appearances for mexico not bad eh?
As others have said it is not working for him at west ham because of the way we are setting up the team

    • Lazurus. rises like a salmon says:

With you on sakho but he’s being misused and is probably on his way unless he’s given a reprieve(cant see it) for being our best striker IMO but not getting a chance ! What ever the reason he won’t be used and sold for a pittance ? Jimbo hit a good point though , Carroll , lanzini , sakho , not in squad ! Not injured but also not FA cup tied!! One to watch in Jan ?😉
Maybe sakho is hanging on for a free ! I would and boost my wage up ? Why not ! Give the remark making little hobbit a slap in his pocket !!!😎 15 mill is a joke !!!!😤

  • aol says:

Hernandez is a great striker, but he won’t ever get chance to show that at West Ham. We’re fighting for points and so our set-up is defensive. When we’re expected to dominate a game, e.g. v Shrewsbury, we can’t, at least not with the makeshift side put out yesterday. Hernandez would get goals at Man City, Chelsea, Man U, even at Newcastle, where the emphasis is on attacking with flair and speed. Our defence isn’t good enough to allow the attackers to express themselves, especially with Hart making everyone nervous. At the moment needs must, but we also need to be able to put teams to the sword, especially in the next few games, otherwise we’re stuffed. If our team was set up progressively Hernandez he would score goals.

  • Essexirons says:

Hernandez is a luxury player in my view, comes off the bench & shines. Being in a relegation dog fight is completely new to him, in a poor team like ours atm he is not what is needed. A lone striker? No chance, he feeds of knock downs or half chances
