Funny how the football fates conspire to throw up fascinating encounters through player careers and club histories. Three years ago West Ham were the Champions of Europe thanks to their triumphant Europa Conference League campaign, and just three short seasons later they’re fighting it out in the second tier of English football. Who’d have thought it.
Similarly nobody watching on that evening of 7th June 2023 could have envisaged the turn of events that would take so many of the trophy winners from that night away from the club in the ensuing seasons. Only Bowen, Areola and Soucek remain from that starting eleven in Prague and West Ham’s main striker from that night could well be lining up against them come August 29th.

West Ham’s former number 9 is now working with Watford in the hope of getting a contract that could see him start against the side for which he still holds the Premier League goal scoring record – in that would be an emotional afternoon indeed.
A return to the Championship – sadly not as a Hammer- would be remarkable achievement for Antonio after smashing his femur and almost dying in the car crash that ended his Hammers career in the winter of 2024.
Good luck to him. If he makes it into the Hornets squad you just wouldn’t bet against him scoring against his old club.
At last – Michail Antonio has managed to find a club willing to pay him what he was asking from us to resume his playing days.
Too rich for us but I would be delighted if he proved himself correct in his valuation.
