West Ham eye summer midfielder swoop

West Ham United are reportedly eyeing a summer swoop for Sporting CP’s attacking midfielder Pedro Goncalves, as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season.

The 25-year-old Portuguese winger has been a standout performer for Sporting CP this season, contributing an impressive 15 goals and 14 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.  His versatility is another attractive quality, as he can comfortably play on the flanks, through the centre of midfield, or even in a more advanced attacking role.

Goncalves’ career path has seen him overcome an unsuccessful stint at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017. After failing to make his mark in the Premier League, he found success on loan at F.C. Famalicão before earning a permanent move to Sporting CP in 2020. Since then, he has thrived in Portugal, establishing himself as a key player for both club and country.

Goncalves’ impressive form has attracted attention from several top clubs. While Liverpool were reportedly interested in January, West Ham appear to be the most concrete contender at this stage.

The Hammers are looking to reinforce their attack, particularly with the uncertain future of Lucas Paqueta, who has garnered interest from Manchester City. Goncalves’ versatility and goal-scoring prowess make him a potential ideal replacement for Paqueta.

West Ham’s transfer chief Tim Steidten is reportedly working diligently to secure Goncalves’ signature. The Hammers have been scouting him closely in recent weeks in preparation for a potentially busy summer transfer window.

With over three years remaining on his contract at Sporting CP, West Ham can expect to pay a significant fee to acquire Goncalves’ services. The upcoming summer transfer window promises to be an interesting one for West Ham United, with Pedro Goncalves emerging as a potential key target for the club.
