West Ham’s high wages have knock on effect

|

Twitter user @EXWHUEMployee has told listeners on the West Ham Way Podcast broadcast on Phoenix FM that high earners in West Ham squad are causing a knock on effect to those what parity.

“The problem with doing this and making our interest in Nasri clear and that we’re prepared to pay that wage is it’s had a knock-on effect about what other players feel that they’re worth,” EX told The West Ham Way podcast.

“Because we’re prepared to pay 80 grand for a player that hasn’t played for a year, that has been out in Turkey but prior to that was on the way out it seemed way before that. And he’s going to get 80 grand, which will put him up probably to about fifth or sixth highest earner at the club.”

“Immediately you get someone like Arnautovic, who is our star man let’s be honest, he looks at the fact that this 31-year-old who hasn’t played for ages is going to get 80 grand, he’s thinking Hernandez who’s on the bench and never scoring, yet he’s the one scoring, is on 140 or whatever it is”

“He sees Anderson on 150, Yarmolenko on 110. I’m not entirely sure what Arnautovic is on but it’s not that I don’t think.

“So this has had a knock-on effect on a number of players, hence the Arnautovic situation.”

Claret and Hugh View:

There is no doubt that poor wage structures within clubs can lead to player unhappiness. It is important to have a good wage structure and stick to it as Spurs did for a very long time. Reportedly Declan Rice is on £3,000 per week with a £10,000 per appearance bonus while Javier Hernandez sits on the bench on up to £145,000 per week. Andy Carroll earns £85,000 per week for not playing while Samri Nasri is reported to want up to £95,000 per week to join on a short-term contract.

Arnautovic is reported to earn £100,000 per week but as the Hammers star player, I can see why he would want equal parity with Javier Hernandez and Felipe Anderson at the very least. Manuel Lanzini is scheduled to return early next year but his pay packet is said to be around £35,000 per week as he never managed to tie down a new contract before his injury.
