I’ll bet few of the 50,000 plus West Ham fans who crossed their fingers and renewed their season tickets in June and July expected quite such a show to be put on in front of them this early – if at all – in the Hammers’ Championship campaign.
The highs and lows of the summer, from Sullivan’s resignation through the ‘Kretinsky statement’ to the sale of favourite players like Summerville, Potts and Fernandes, were put in proper context by events on the pitch last night.
Apart from the style of the Wrexham demolition (which still sounds good the next day) Nuno’s West Ham achieved a very special ‘first’ in the club’s 131 year history, according to Yahoo Sports:
“To win 6-0 over anyone is great, but do so over what could be a promotion rival is all the more impressive.
An added element to the win saw the hosts win with six different goalscorers getting in on the act.
They helped to make history for West Ham as the first time in their 131-year history that they’ve had six different scorers in a single match.”
So, Jarrod Bowen, Joel Piroe, Dinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mohamadou Kanté and Manor Solomon, take a bow.

Somewhere, there needs to be a plaque or a special image which becomes part of the London Stadium wall art to commemorate the feat which has never been accomplished by a West Ham team until last night.
And after the troubling summer that players, coaches, support staff and fans have endured, it is only right that it should be celebrated.
At least until Monday.
Fulham will do their best to bring us all back down to earth in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening but Nuno will no doubt give half a dozen of ‘the youngsters’ another opportunity as he did against Southampton. So, lots to relish, frankly, whatever the outcome.
And whatever happens in that game, the Irons will be licking their lips at the prospect of next weekend’s game at Millwall if they can replicate even briefly last night’s scintillating form.

A truly great performance, which I hope will continue. But, I doubt that Wrexham will be “promotion rivals”. They were pretty poor ; mind you, a lot of that was down to West Ham being so good. Congratulations to Nuno & the team, & long may it continue – until the final day of the season & promotion, I hope. After the first 3 games I was pretty despondent, & had largely written them off ; but the team is rapidly putting everything together & looking a class above every other team I have seen. Millwall will be the acid test – if we play like last night, then everything will look very rosy indeed.
