West Ham fans still await new arrivals – with first pre-season fixture this weekend

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg Hamburger SV have snapped up Martin Adeline for around €4m.

At Troyes, according to footymetrics Adeline showed strong creativity and passing along with scoring 10 goals, yet was not physically dominant and average in defensive and aerial metrics.

Were West Ham ever genuinely interested?

This is where things get murky, and where the rumour mill tends to inflate reality. In this summer’s transfer window, Adeline’s name has been loosely linked to West Ham in a handful of reports, but nothing credible ever emerged. Claret & Hugh asked one of our transfer sources over the weekend, who confirmed:

“We were never in for him.”

With Nils Koppen now firmly installed as West Ham’s Head of Recruitment the club are focused on players who are physical and will be able to handle the intensity of the Championship, ideally bringing in leadership or experience to Nuno’s squad.

So while Adeline may become a strong Bundesliga performer, he’s not the type of midfielder West Ham were prioritising.

It’s not a case of “missing out.” as he was simply never a serious target.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.
