You’ve got to love West Ham midfielder Tomáš Souček, who is a big man with a big heart. Fresh off the back of a brand-new contract and two goals in last night’s 6-0 Championship victory over Lincoln City, Big Sou was the unexpected recipient of some on-pitch admiration.
A young West Ham supporter ran onto the field after the final whistle, clearly overcome with excitement following the Hammers’ emphatic victory. Rather than running towards the stands, the youngster made a beeline for his hero, Souček.
We’ve seen this type of thing unfold numerous times before, and usually it ends with an overzealous steward intervening. Let’s be fair, nothing sends people power crazy quite like a hi-vis vest to signify their authority.
On this occasion, however, the Lincoln City official showed excellent restraint, allowing the midfielder to deal with the situation as the youngster approached.
Souček Shows His Big Heart
The 6ft 4in Czech midfielder crouched down to give the young lad a cuddle, creating a lovely moment at the end of a memorable night for West Ham.
Souček then escorted the boy back towards his family in the stands, to rapturous applause and a bit of a sing-song from the travelling Hammers supporters.
Not content with that, Souček really made the youngster’s night by giving him his shirt.
It was a lovely gesture from a player who has been brilliant for West Ham and who still has plenty to offer on the pitch.
Only yesterday, I was writing about how Souček had answered his critics with two goals after receiving an unfair amount of stick following the QPR game.
But moments like this remind us why he’s such a popular figure among West Ham supporters.
Two goals, a 6-0 win and a young fan heading home with his hero’s shirt. Not a bad night’s work for Big Sou.
This is a really good story and it’s wonderful to see how Tomas is admired by that young fan. Great job of public relations from our mister nice guy who just loves West Ham United. How can you not like him?
Top bloke and great role model.
Well done mate (and a nod in the direction of some sensible stewardship too 👏).
