Since the Mateus Fernandes millions landed in the bank account, West Ham’s manager has been credited with seeking to turn away from some of the ‘modest’ transfer targets as the club seek to raise the bar on their summer recruitment.
With nobody other than Keiber Lamadrid signed as yet, it is difficult to judge the impact of Nuno’s demand for higher quality players. Turning down the opportunity to sign Dael Fry seemed to support the quest for quality, as have recent links with better, Premier League-standard targets like James McAtee and Dwight McNeil.
Which makes the report this morning that West Ham are looking at Brighton’s Tommy Watson something of a head scratcher. The Brighton winger failed to and ended up in the Championship on loan last season, where, according to eplindex.com, his performance was anything BUT stellar:
“Brighton saw enough to spend £10 million on him, but the move has not clicked so far. His “start to life on the South Coast has been challenging”.
He struggled for opportunities, then went to Millwall for the second half of the campaign and “could not register a goal or assist in 16 matches across all competitions”.

Tommy Watson – zero to show in sixteen starts in the Championship last season
Those are cold numbers, and they matter.”
Quite. Not sure that the Hammers faithful or Nuno will be impressed with zero assists in sixteen for a winger who is being linked with a West Ham move this summer.
He’s unlikely to make an impact and you’d expect him to disappear from the West Ham radar almost as fast as he’s appeared this weekend.
West Ham already have one forward who achieved next to nothing in seventeen starts: The last thing they need is another misfire when the Championship campaign demands hitting the ground running (and winning) come August.
If we really do have a new look new strategic regime then surely we won’t go for this bloke. He might have been a Sully Summer Special but surely not for Postman Pat?
One thing that we know about Nuno is that he keeps his cards close to his chest – perhaps even more so than Moyes
So we should only criticize him when he actually makes a signing not on the basis of rumors
I know that C&H has to inform us of the rumors but I take most with a pinch of salt
Wow, so much negativity around the current ownership and management structure at the club from the site now. Is this because BS and co are no longer feeding you tidbits from the top table?
I’m reminded of the phrase “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
