McAvennie: “Slav looks like a man caught in headlights”

Frank McAvennie reckons Slaven Bilic is giving off the appearance of a man “caught in the headlights” as he bids to get the Hammers right back on track.

But he believes this weekend represents his biggest test so far in what’s proving a tough season given he has a near fully fit squad.

Speaking exclusively to ClaretandHugh the former striker declared: “He has to freshen things up or the fans are gonna be right on his back and for me that means dropping Andy Carroll.

McAvennie“All that’s happening is that we are lumping it up to him and it’s just not working – he must find a different option and for me that means Diafra Sakho has to play.

“He’s the one striker at the club who has serious movement and guile and remains for me the best at the club. He needs to play alongside Hernandez with Lanzini in behind.

“Right now Slave is giving off the appearance of a man who is caught in the headlights, not knowing which way to turn next.

“To be honest I’m not sure he still has the players he wants or who’s buying them – I think he’s working under a difficult regime which isn’t helping.

But the fact remains that he has a great striker in Sakho – as good as I’ve seen in recent years but isn’t giving him the opportunities the guy deserves.

And he joked: “People tell me Sakho is a head case but all us strikers are. Forget all that stuff. he’s a player at the club and should be in the team. For me that’s a given.

“Burnley are a tough side to break down but with Sakho, Hernandez and Lanzini playing together up top we have enough to beat them.”

Frankie Mc has also spoken to Claretandhugh about Lou Macari’s criticisms of his fitness when in charge of the Irons and we will be bringing you that piece later today
