Reece Oxford is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid who are looking at the England Under-20 international as a potential signing for this summer, should his development in the Bundesliga continue reports the Daily Telegraph.
The 19-year-old is back on his second spell on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach after a brief return to the Hammers in January. He struggled to get in the side at the Bundesliga club in the early part of the season but last Sunday started at right-back against Borussia Dortmund.
Atletico have looked at Oxford, whose best position is a centre-back, over a long period and feel that he could be a good long-term prospect with his immediate development path likely to be further loan spells. Oxford was the subject of a £8 million bid from Monchengladbach in January which was rejected by West Ham with the club valuing the player at around £12 million.
It’s being said that he prefers Spain as his next port of call. Is he really planning his long term future as a top footballer, or just planning his long term holiday schedule?
It’s about time he knuckled down to some work and showed some progress. He is fast becoming known as the biggest pi** taker of all time, and still only 19.
Next season is make or break for him. Still hoping he will have picked up some valuable lessons in Germany. They have been playing him recently & they think nothing of bringing 18/19 year olds through, either from other countries or their own academies. This may be the way forward for PL clubs. Our approach recently has been to recruit ‘ established’ players but that has not been great success has it?
Trouble with loaning players abroad, is it’s far too attractive for them to want to come back. The excitement alone can turn a young mans head.
I wonder if we will ever see him again.
Like you I hope he surprises me and plays for us next season.
I saw him live last week at right back and he played it very simple and very neat, only mis-placed one pass, but hardly went over the half-way line ( which is the way he was told to play it ). Not easy to judge him on in a different type of game.
