Hammers weighing their winter striker options

|

Diego Costa

Ok, we have regularly been told by the board that they – and every other club is in a state financially – and of course most reasonable people will accept that.

It’s been a dreadful year for everybody and listening to the Prime Minister this morning predicting things will probably remain as bad or worse for some months has me for one wondering what the hell is going on with two vaccines now available.

Ok, I’ll go no further in case my political petticoat start to slip but the simple situation is at West Ham we need a striker badly.

Under what appears to be the present situation – that only two loans are allowed at any given time – the owners  may need to dig into limited resources for a striker this month.

Indeed – whilst pointing out the lack of finances, manager Moyes claims the board will back him in the market.

The likelihood is that – as we have reported – Haller will be sold back to a German club in the summer –  with four Bundesliga  outfits already  understood to have enquired.

No new names are emerging from the club on who could be an option to buy this month  although such as 32 year old Diego Costa have been thrown around in the media.

That sort of suggestion is always gonna be made at this time of the year but we we know for certain is that a striker is at the top of the wanted list.

Let’s just hope we don’t make the mistake of signing a Jordan Hugill of Albian Ajeti.

But one way or another Moyes and the board have to find an answer up front.

We really do need a striker as you say, Hugh, and I think offloading Haller to the BL would be great. The age old problem – who would fit? I would be unhappy with Diego – another big wage end of career man. Josh King? Not enough goals for me, and not a lone striker. I know – ask Thomas Souceck for a tip!!

  • Sam says:

Sorry have i read this correctly?

The relevant rule declares: “Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.“

So we aren’t allowed two more. The rule says 4 in TOTAL for the season but only 2 at one time. So you would have to end the current 2 loans in order to get 2 new ones.

    • “Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time. – The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.” I read that as two in summer and two in winter Sam but will check it

  • GaryD says:

I think Costa, on loan, would be fun. Agree with Pete that his best days are behind him but no defender will sleep well the night before playing against him, and will be sporting many bruises the night after. Even if he just provides a break for Antonio, he can score.
Reality is, he is too expensive and could be a real liability with VAR watching his every move as we move to a contact free sport.

  • Face says:

If we’re going to recruit a supervillain striker then I’d rather we brought back Aggravating Arnie Arnoutavic than buy Dirty Diego Costa.

  • Terry says:

Moyes said something recently, maybe because of frustration with Haller, about finding another Arnoutavic or Antonio from inside the squad. I wonder whether he has considered playing Souchek upfront as a striker.

    • Taffyhammer says:

Soucek up front? Then who does all the stuff in his former position? Noble?
Perhaps he would rather be a success in his current role than a flop as lone striker. Even accomplished, proven, successful, goal scoring forwards like Ivory Coast International Sebastain Haller can seem to be pretty ordinary and not delivering as expected.
Leave Soucek where he is and enjoy the teamwork.
