Areola’s mega chance

|

Alphonse Areola is almost certain to go to the World Cup with France after AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan sustained an injury.

Maignan was seen as the back-up to Hugo Lloris for the French national team; he has won five caps for his country.

However, he has now sustained a calf injury in training and L’Equipe reports that he could now be out of the tournament which begins next month.

Areola has regularly been the third-choice in goal for France and he is now likely to climb up the pecking order following the injury to Maignan.

Areola has also won five caps for Les Bleus and started their most recent Nations League game against Denmark, a game that they lost 2-0.

The Hammers stopper will now hope to work his way into the squad and potentially get some minutes at the World Cup.

France play Australia, Tunisia and, funnily enough, Denmark again in their group, as they look to retain the trophy they won in 2018.
