It is unlikely that the hugely entertaining England v Mexico World Cup last sixteen clash will have done Edson Alvarez‘ transfer prospects any favours. The Mexico skipper, on as a second half substitute, was the subject of widely shared social media posts showing him flunking the header which ultimately led to England’s third goal.

Whilst Alvarez’ fitness has been proven following a long ankle injury layoff, his contribution to his national side’s ultimate defeat would have left him far from satisfied and failed to impress would-be club suitors considering his services next season.

However it seems ‘El Machin’ has made up his mind – following a disappointing loan in Turkey last season – that his future lies away from London Stadium.

Following Graham Potter’s decision to send him out on a half-season loan to Fenerbahce, it always seemed unlikely that Nuno would reverse the sentiment and welcome him back with open arms. In many West Ham fans’ minds, he’s been a disappointing signing having peaked in 2023 and copped far too many yellow and red cards since.

News from Sky Germany suggests there is a new path open to him, with the midfielder being ‘open to joining Koln with immediate effect’.

Alvarez ‘is open’ to a move to Germany

The reason this is ‘difficult to complete‘ is likely to be Alvarez’ West Ham wages: Even halved with a ‘relegation clause’ kicking in, the Mexican will be earning well above Koln’s preferred salary and will likely have to take a drop to make the move.

As for fees, the Hammers’ll be lucky to make €15 million back on the player after inserting a reported €17m loan option in his Fenerbahce contract which , needless to say, the Turkish side declined to take up. Perhaps another loan deal beckons for the skipper who led his side to CONCACAF victory last summer.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

In the Mexico game he only came on at half time and had been good in his previous matches so he may have had a niggle ?

As soon as he was on he was captain and I didn’t think he was that bad, can’t see this happening as Koln will get nowhere near our valuation and he is going to probably want more money than they can afford.

Alvarez captained his Country to CONACAF title, picking up Man otTournament award, while scoring winning goal.
West Hams issues were hardly down to him (He wasn’t part of the side that got relegated), so it seems like he’s been burned at the stake, for another person’s crime.
If his agent cannot get him a better gig than Koln or Fernabache, he needs new representation.

  • Spindrift says:

He’s got bags of experience but I’d rather have Kante / Potts starting than Alvarez tbh.

  • John Ayris says:

About £14.2m amortised value on the books, less loan fees he’s bought in. If he brings that in he will be sold, if not he’ll go out on loan again to amortise some more…

  • Nick the Hammer says:

Alvarez was NOT a West Ham conference league winner. He signed AFTER the sale of Declan Rice.

yep, thanks, I’m getting old. thought ‘concacaf’, wrote’conference league’. well spotted.

  • jeff6969 says:

i don’t think he was a Hammer when West Ham were Conference League medal winners Martin x

    • DJHammer says:

      Definitely not a medal winner.
Moves purchased Alverez and JWP to replace Rice, but his no.1 pick was McTomminay. Over £ 55m flushed down the karzee,
