CandH rates every Iron used this season

|

Slaven Bilic has used a remarkable 24 players during our 11 Premier League matches so far.

With the international break upon us ClaretandHugh’s regular ratings man NIALL McDONALD runs the rule over our key performers and under-achievers:

michail-antonio-west-ham-stoke_3387473Antonio: Been played at right-back, left-wing, right-midfield and centre forward with varying success but still scored 6 vital goals and won his first international call-up 8

Payet: Do we expect too much? We’re already heavily reliant on the assists, the set-pieces and the wonder goals. Short of running round to get on the end of his own crosses I don’t know what else he can do! 7

Obiang: He’s certainly had to wait long enough for his chance, but he’s taken it and put in a run of very effective performances in front of the back-four. Taken the pressure off Noble 7

Reid: Racked up the most appearances in our seemingly ever-changing back-line. Salvaged a massive three points with the last kick against Sunderland 6

Cresswell: Arguably we missed him more than Carroll or Sakho and his return coincided with three wins in a fortnight. Seeing less of the ball pushed on, I prefer to see him overlapping from deeper 6

Fernandes: The youngster has quality and is an obvious prospect. Will adjust to the pace and physical demands of the PL I’m sure 6

Fletcher: Has physical presence, nice touch and awareness. Clearly been well-taught at Man Utd and looks to have a real striker’s instinct. Has the support of the crowd too. Has everything in fact, except a goal to his name. Hopefully he will get one very very soon! 6

Adrian: Despite his regular top-class saves you can’t overlook errors that turned the games against Watford and Stoke. Let in 20 goals in 11 matches but retains the support of the manager, for now 5

Collins: A surprise member of our exclusive club of goal-scorers; I fear Ginge is starting to show signs his best days may be behind him 5

Kouyate: Looked very heavy-legged in midfield early in the season, which took away one of his key attributes. Now on the right of the back three and improving 5

Masuaku: Tough gig being judged against Cresswell’s high standards. Did well in our mini-revival at the Etihad. Another who has succumbed to our injury curse 5

Ogbonna: Proved he wasn’t a left-back at the Hawthorns. Looks more comfortable in the back three although I do wonder if we are getting 100 per cent from him 5

Noble: Against Stoke the skipper received his first “Noble you’re so slow!!!” of the season from me, which is not bad going, 11 matches in. Still stoic in the middle when we have been crying out for some incision 4

Lanzini: I’m giving Manuel a break, because he didn’t get one before going to the Olympics then he got injured and missed a proper pre-season. Really struggling to last the 90 mins just now 4

Zaza: His first touch in the claret and blue was an overhead scissors kick through ball for Antonio against Watford but it’s been downhill ever since. Isn’t it very ‘West Ham’ that Zaza’s only goal this season was against us in the Juventus pre-season friendly? 3

Byram: Had to watch Antonio start the season in his position before injuries gave him a chance. Struggled against Watford and suffered a bad injury on his next start 3

Calleri: Generally consigned to late substitute appearances Calleri has struggled. Blew a golden one-on-one against Bournemouth which could have set him up for a run in the team 3

Feghouli: Our attempt to find a Mahrez-style cut price bargain has not yet paid off. If he was signed as cover for Antonio we’d better pray Michail stays fit! 3

Nordviedt: Probably what would be classed a ‘utility-player’ back in the day. So far shown himself to be no better than anyone we already have in his many positions 2

Tore: We’re a tough crowd and when we turn on a player they know all about it. Tore has been dreadful and there’s no way back for him 1

Honourable mentions to Carroll and Ayew, who haven’t featured enough to be scored and from whom we hope to see much more when the season gets back underway.

Throw in AC at -1 for his poor performance at the pizza palace after a few beers after the team bonding session and your pretty much spot on with those marks 🙂

  • jimbo says:

I think your scoring of Tore is generous! He has done nothing so nothing is his score. Obiang is a 8 and I’d even nudge Fernandes up as both are as good as we’ve got on current form.

The best posting on this site so far this season . Spot on with the ratings although a little generous to Noble . Perhaps he deserves a 4 for loyalty and effort , certainly not for performance .A 4 still makes him the lowest of regular picks so I will not argue . Couldn’t really disagree with Jimbo either .

I would up Fernandes to an 8, Byram to a 6, Masuaku to a 7 he only had one bad game for gods sake, Zaza I would give a 5 purely for effort, likewise Nordveidt who I am confident will go on to prove is actually a very good player, Feghouli got injured early doors so like Lanzini his mark hould be increased but I would give him a 6, Ayew wasn’t mentioned but I would give him a 5.5. The fact that we all know they are capable of better or much better in some cases shows that if they do lift their games we have nothing to worry about COYI !!!
