West Ham United‘s future under new manager Julen Lopetegui is a hot topic, with club legend Tony Cottee igniting a debate about the Spaniard’s appointment.

Fuming over the news, Cottee took to social media, slamming the board’s decision as “uninspired.” He argued for a “dynamic, young, British manager” to spearhead the club’s rebuild, suggesting names like Michael Carrick and Graham Potter. Cottee emphasised the importance of a fresh approach, especially during a crucial transfer window.

However, not everyone agrees with Cottee. Some fans believe the criticism is premature. While acknowledging David Moyes’ contributions, they still see the need for a change. Lopetegui’s experience and pedigree are undeniable, with a Europa League win under his belt at Sevilla and stints managing Porto and the Spanish national team.

The crux of the debate lies in experience versus potential. Cottee champions young, hungry managers who can inject fresh ideas and build a team for the long haul. Lopetegui’s supporters, on the other hand, back his proven track record and believe he can deliver immediate success.

Ultimately, Lopetegui’s performance will determine the success of this appointment. While Cottee’s criticism raises valid points, some fans urge reserving judgment until Lopetegui has a chance to prove himself. Only time will tell if West Ham has made the right call, but one thing’s for sure: the future of the club is a topic that deeply divides the Hammers faithful.

I’m uninspired, we don’t want a Spanish Moyes, but none of us have a working knowledge of the bloke.

Lovely sentiment employing someone like Carrick or promising homegrown manager from the lower leagues but if it goes tits up everyone would equally be up in arms.

It can’t be any worse than 2024. Our season effectively ended with the Jan window and Moyes’s delusional small squad theory and ‘Marquee signing’.

  • Pessimist says:

I remember playing Sevilla and they were class, managing to attack with gusto and defend well. So let’s give the man a chance. I remember sentiment being used before with Alan Curbishley and that was a disaster. Would rather stick to experience at a higher level.

  • Deathblow says:

Let’s face it, Judas Cottee would know about flogging a dead horse, enter Pye in the Sky Capitol.
Everything he says is uninspiring. Bitter little toffee

    • Saul says:

Exactly, who cares what this moron thinks. Don’t know why people like him even have a platform. Yes he played for us once, that doesn’t mean everything he say’s has to be given any credence whatsoever.

  • Simon says:

So who actually is Mr Cottee attacking?
The media appointed new manager, or the WH board?

And why is this pundit notblasting the total miserable performance of a useless 1st team and manager, standing on an almost new record on 70 goals against, with absolutely no certainly of a point from the next two matches? Moyes has thoroughly messed up this team, which will take a heck of a lot of work to get us to be a top 4/6 Premier standard team consistently?

So yes whoever the next manager may be, let’s just him at least after 10/15 proper matches, and not do a VAR check on him before he starts?

Coyi – God bless West Ham !

I would have preferred Sullivan go all out for Amorim, as Steinten and Noble recommended, however, if Lopertegui is our man, he needs our full backing. We can’t carry on with all the negativity around the club. Fingers crossed the board back the manager with a decent squad rebuild.

  • Dave says:

Moyes record this season and last is terrible he had to go. Give Lopetegui a chance before slagging him off

  • D.f.butcher says:

How do we know amorin wouldn’t be a disaster , I personally hope our knew broom sweeps clean and exciting times loom ahead for whoever ends up running the show , my mum always called west ham fyffes because she said we were like all coppers a bunch of narnas sometimes I can’t help thinking she was right

  • DJHammer says:

For perspective, if Real Madrid offer you the role of head coach, or indeed the Spanish national team, I would say that person must be of the highest calibre within his field.
If that person believes in himself to coach a team in the Premier league who were rock bottom and navigate them into mid table under immense pressure with little margin of error, I’d say let’s give him a chance to rebuild and reshape a squad that is currently misfiring. Managers come and go, as do players. Let’s look forward and whatever happens we will still love our club. COYI

  • Mark Fletcher says:

This appointment feels like another Pellegrini and we all remember how that worked out. Sullivan has not got a good record of appointing managers…big fat Sam, Avram grant, Zola FFS!!🤦🏼

  • Tezzard says:

Dullivan didn’t appoint zola , he got rid of him
