Contract rebel happy to play Moyes game

Contract rebel Johnson is just happy to play

Ben Johnson has made it clear that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to play for West Ham, irrespective of position. The Hammers’ defender has become something of a utility man this season, switching between numerous roles.

It’s a testament to the player’s ability and character that he’s seemingly able to play anywhere on the pitch at a high level. Johnson is out of contract in July, although his commitment can’t be questioned, having been at West Ham since the age of eight.

His performances have clearly caught the eye of several Premier League clubs, who understandably would be keen to recruit such a valuable player for free. Hopefully, the club can rectify a completely unnecessary situation by agreeing on a new deal with the academy graduate, who is keen to sign on the dotted line.

Johnson is merely asking for a wage comparable with other squad members and the chance to prove himself in the first team. However, he’s happy to do so by playing in any position David Moyes wants him to.

Johnson will keep improving

Speaking to the club website, Johnson said: “I’m happy to play wherever the manager wants to put me. I used to play midfield when I was younger and I enjoy that role, but getting my bearings again in that position does take a little time. But I like to think I’m willing to learn and I can do that job. I want to fill in wherever the team needs me and do the best I can.

“I can definitely take some positives from Old Trafford. Of course, I can only do as well as the team does. I feel like there were some good performances across the group out there and, personally, I just want to keep going and enjoying my football.”

Such a refreshing attitude from a footballer who always seems to play with a smile on his face. Let’s hope this contractual nonsense gets sorted sooner rather than later.

Ben Johnson is a true Hammer and very valuable to the club. So come on, West Ham, give him a new contract and pay him a realistic wage that his value to the club deserves! If you don’t then there are a lot of top clubs who would not hesitate to snap him up and do the right thing by him.
