£17m man in plea to David Moyes

Maxwel Cornet has dropped a subtle hint to Hammer boss David Moyes, expressing his desire for more game time. Like many West Ham supporters, I’m scratching my head wondering why the club brought Cornet on board in the first place.

The Ivorian winger definitely has talent, but like some others at the club, his confidence seems to have taken a hit along with his time on the pitch. It’s pretty clear that Moyes doesn’t view the £17 million signing as a key part of his plans, and Cornet’s frustration came through in a recent interview with the club’s media team.

Cornet picked up a hamstring injury during training, which has kept him on the side-lines during a busy stretch. But he’s determined to bounce back strong when he’s fit for selection.

He’s expressed his frustration about his limited role since joining from Burnley in August 2022, but he’s also made it clear that he respects Moyes’ decisions and will keep working hard for his chance to shine in Claret and Blue.

“My time here has been a bit up and down,” said Cornet. “I’m really frustrated because I haven’t been able to show the supporters what I’m capable of due to various reasons.

“I got injured, and when I came back, it wasn’t the best timing because the team was doing well. The manager stuck with the starters, which was understandable since they were performing. It wasn’t the perfect situation.

“I’m determined to find my top form here. Hopefully, more opportunities will come my way.”

Cornet’s desperate plea to play football

Cornet is making good progress with his recovery and hopes to be back in action soon, aiming to return for the Hammers’ upcoming clash against Newcastle United.

“It’s been a bit tough dealing with a few injuries because as a player, you never want to be out or injured. It’s not fun. You lose your fitness, and you have to work hard to catch up when you’re back. You see your teammates playing, and you want to be out there with them, but it’s all part of the game. I just need to be patient and listen to my body to come back stronger.”

The interview felt like a subtle plea to the manager for more chances, and Cornet made sure to remind Moyes of his European experience. “I’m eager to get as many minutes as possible for the rest of the season. I believe we have what it takes to make a mark in the UEFA Europa League.

“Our goal is to keep the club in Europe, whether it’s Europa League or, why not, even Champions League?

“I’ve played in the Champions League with Lyon, and I can see the quality we had there and what we have at West Ham. We’ve got talent. We’ve got big players.”
