Cottee misses the answer to his big complaint

|

CotteeheadphonesTony Cottee appears to have got the right hump that his pal Slaven Bilic has lost his job but sadly logic often gets lost when emotions take over.

He has had much to say on Sky Sports and, without naming anybody in particular, it hardly needs a degree  to work out where he thinks things have gone wrong.

But in making one important point he misses another which in fact the answer to the problem he raised on player recruitment.

He snapped: ““Who is signing the players? When Slaven signed poor players it was his fault but when it was good players it wasn’t to do with him. Can Moyes sign his own players in January or will someone else be doing it?”

You will note how the former manager gets the Christian name treatment whilst the new man is described by his surname – it’s an old journalistic trick which creates a bias without anyone thinking about it.

What TC overlooks is that David Moyes is being re-united with a colleague from his Everton days – recruitment director to the board Tony Henry.

The pair worked successfully together at Goodison and it seems a pretty happy ‘coincidence’ that they are being brought together again at a time when Moyes can look over the shortlist of players no doubt already drawn up by Henry ahed of January.

And it certainly avoids any tensions between the manager and the boardroom on player selection which may not have been the case when Sam Allardyce or Slaven were in charge.

TC also claimed that “Moyes” should perhaps have been given a deal for three years so “the players will settle down…”

Well actually, perhaps they should do that anyway given what they are earning and play for whoever is in charge – I had thought that’s what sportsmen did.”

Also it’s been made quite clear that David Moyes is a caretaker boss with the possibility of it becoming permanent if it works. It’s down to those same players to see it does!

Wasn’t the point Cottee was making about transfers was that Sullivan shouldn’t have any input other than to sign the cheque? I mean if Moyes and Henry agree, who cares what Sullivan thinks? As TC said, he claims the good deals are his and the bad ones are everyone else’s. Just pipe down Sullivan and let the football experts do their jobs.

100% agree it’s like anything with that board if it works out they take all the credit if not it’s everyone else’s fault and sorry to bang on about this with all the stats coming out let’s have a look at the ones since they made us move to that khazi of a stadium that no one will even sponsor

The problem with emotional pundits, also Dean Ashton, is that they spend many minutes contradicting themselves. All which plays into the hands of misinformed fans, a la Doubting Trumpas. Tony Gale tends to retain an air of objectivity and is by far the most sensible commentator.
So much negativity comes from the club that they really must learn to say nothing, if nothing good to say. Even more so, to stop making wild, unattainable promises.
The void between owners and fans is as wide as ever and could be solved reasonably quickly with some decent PR.

Hugh – You missed Cottee’s point completely. Cottee is a legend, Moyes is a bell end. By the way Moyes was called Dithering Dave by the Everton fans because of his poor transfer record there. His record at Everton is completely exaggerated. A few good seasons and a few bad seasons fighting relegation. Since then 3 back-to-back failures. The spin people are putting on this is incredible. I know c+h is full of club stooges but it takes the **** sometimes. Now I’m seriously wondering if some of you are West Ham employees.

    • No we’re not but it seems we aren’t allowed to make any point without guys like you throwing that crap around. You clearly didn’t see or have chosen to havr forgotten my persosonal criticism of the board. I know exactly what his and Gale’s points are – the board are to blame for everything and anybody who dares to point out it maybe a bit more complex than that is an employee. Such bollix. And actually you know nothing and fail to see beyond your own prejudices. Cottee’s a legend – Moyes is a bell end. Ah such superlative logic!!!!!

The buck stops at the top does it to H, in that case, the owners do have to shoulder blame, i for me i like the fact TC has defended his mate.
Moyes is the Possibly the best manager The Daves have ever appointed,
that about sums up their ability to deliver on their aims they set out before ripping up the West Ham play book and moving the goalposts.
All the stick the owners are getting is a classic case of keeping what they sowed.

Sorry Hugh, I know it’s long been a criticism that this blog is an “unofficial official” mouthpiece for the board but the amount of pro Moyes stuff that suddenly appeared here on Monday morning doesn’t help. Also shooting down anyone who dares to criticise the board or the Moyes appointment, be it from former players or readers, doesn’t help either.

This blog was definitely paving the way for the Moyes appointment full force Monday morning. Listening to Sean on the radio when he almost said how much Alladyce had asked for and then hastily glossed over it means you are definitely getting your “facts” from deep within the club. I suspect only those at the very top would have been party to Alladyce financial discussions. So you may think you are following journalistic impartial reporting here, but I suspect your “club insiders” don’t see it that way.

As for accusing readers here for having biased agendas…seriously?!?! We just have our own individual opinions as fans. We don’t have the luxury of “club insiders” feeding us what they want us to hear. We just say, rightly or wrongly, what we feel, and given the sacking of a popular, if flawed manager, is an emotive subject, views are going to be highly charged either side. So pretty poor form having a go at those who bother to read and comment. If you don’t want that, then blogging isn’t the most sensible thing to be doing.

Will Moyes work out? I hope so. But as I have said, if he doesn’t it’s hard to see how the board, or anyone linked to them, can survive the blacklash that will come in that event.

Appointing a new manager less than 24 hours after firing the old one, shows Bilic was long being undermined by the board. To sack him without having the guts to look him in the eyes just shows all their words about honour and integrity were meaningless. Personally, the only actual “broken” people right now are the board. Moyes has nothing to lose. Bilic will go on to other things. The board? They have six months resting on Moyes.
