David Moyes: Winning was what he did

All change at West Ham it seems, with the club announcing David Moyes’ departure and the news of Julen Lopetegui’s appointment as his replacement expected soon.

The decision will at least allow David Moyes to leave the club with some dignity, and the fans will be able to say farewell and thank him for helping win our first trophy in 43 years. It’s a massive shame it had to end this way for a manager who probably should have quit following the Europa Conference League victory in Prague.

However, that iconic trophy win certainly allowed him to go out on his terms, and I’m sure he had every confidence that his team would perform far better this season. Moyes has appeared more confused than most with West Ham’s defensive frailties this term, and was probably not able to oversee the large restructuring required at the club next season.

It’s an unfortunate end to a career which saw Moyes carry West Ham through Covid with exceptional leadership. He appeared to adapt to lockdown football far better than most other Premier League managers, and for many, it was a time when The Hammers performed at their best.

I’ll not pretend that I wanted Moyes to remain at the club, but this is not the time for recriminations. Instead, I’d like to thank him for a trophy win which, if I’m honest, I’d given up hope of witnessing in my lifetime.

Last week we laid Claret & Hugh founder Hughie Southon to rest, and it’s fair to say he was no fan of Moyes. Nonetheless, I’m sure he would have wished the two-time Hammers gaffer well and joined me in thanking him for a job well done.

Cheers, Moyesie.

I will be at he game on Saturday. I will stand up but not clap moyes as it would be hippo critical off me! I can’t wait to see the back of the stubborn scotsman. He treated west ham supporters with contempt and I hope he retires. As I wouldn’t wish any other football club’s supporters to have to go through what us WEST HAM fans have in the last two seasons.Good bye and good riddance to the worst manager I’ve experienced at west ham. NB – west ham won a European trophy but we had 33 % possession paqueta and Bowen made the difference not anything moyes did !!!

100% we won in spite of Moyes not because of him

    • Hammer4life# Moyesout says:

Glad to see the back of this awful, deluded man. He’s done nothing but sneer at, belittle and disrespect this fan base for believing that there’s a better way to play football. Mocking what many believe to be the “West Ham way” and the memories and achievements of great and beloved managers who went before him. Good riddance to him.

  • Iron It Out says:

Call yourself supporters, what a joke! More like little boys filled with bitterness and small minded opinions. Even now you cant give any credit to someone who installed a work ethic and saved the club from relegation TWICE, and then went on to win a trophy as well. Isn’t it past your bed times?

    • Billy says:

You just have to feel sorry for them iron it out. Don’t worry it won’t be long before they start on the next manager. If they won’t give Moyes any credit for three years in Europe and winning a trophy imagine what they’ll be like towards a bad manager.

    • Clacton Rd Iron says:

Why are they not supporters because they hold a different view.
It’s a view – that Moyes was the Manager deserving credit in 17/18 and 19/20 – he didn’t win that many games in either of those seasons, losing far more and playing awful football but we didn’t get relegated.
2020/21 finishing 6th during Covid was great, but could/should have been greater if he had brought in a striker as well as Lingard costing us top 4. 21/22 season up until Christmas was great – but the 2022 Calendar year was absolutely shocking, and finishing 7th was an anti climax. 22/23 Premier League campaign was a disaster- end of finishing 14th flattered us. The Conference League was a great night, but being the 56th best Team in Europe and how it was celebrated shows what a mega, mega fan base we have who deserve so much more.
In the Premier League era Redknapp finished 5th in 1998/99 and Roeder 7th in 2001/02 but the Football Media Luvies don’t speak of them in such revered tones.

I think you are being overly generous of Moyes, Gonzo.

    • Gonzo says:

Not at all Roman, my thoughts on Moyes style of football are well documented. I have hundreds of blogs criticising him, there’s probably no need for another.

A quick flick through these pages or any of my videos will show that I’d like him to leave. But what’s the point of kicking a man when he’s down?

I wish him well, look forward and hope the new bloke works out.

      • David Pope says:

Well said Gonzo. The somewhat vitriolic comments, now that most of us have what we have wanted for some time ( Moyes Out ), are petty.
Moyes dragged us up a level and won some silverware….pretty dire football most of the time…but he did HIS best for the club.
Show a bit of class people!

  • Bonzo says:

How anybody could be confused by our defensive frailties this season when we’ve had to rely on zoumas crocked knees and geriatric ogbonna is beyond me. Aguerds been missing since Afcon. Mavropanos and Coufal blowing hot and cold. Cresswell another geriatric. Good luck to Tim Steidten in finding us a new defence.

  • David says:

A sad day for the real supporters of the club. Thank you David Moyse and I expect your next clubs supporters will be better than some of the idiots who have run you down. West Ham was always a family club with morals – blown away like bubbles today.
