Ex-Watford striker Troy Deeney has sparked fresh debate among West Ham fans by branding the London Stadium the worst atmosphere he’s ever played in.

Deeney, reminiscing about his playing experience on talkSPORT, highlighted the stark contrast between the intimidating roar of Upton Park and the sterile environment of the London Stadium. This sentiment resonates deeply with many West Ham fans who fondly remember the electric atmosphere of their former home.

Deeney’s criticism merely amplifies the long-standing frustration amongst fans regarding the lifeless atmosphere at the London Stadium. Big games, in particular, often lack the intensity and passion associated with a true home advantage.

This isn’t Deeney’s first foray into West Ham territory. Earlier this season, he publicly called out captain Kurt Zouma’s performance. His latest comments are likely to find fertile ground among fans already yearning for a change.

Deeney further speculated that David Moyes‘ exit could trigger a major squad overhaul, potentially costing upwards of £200 million. While acknowledging Moyes’ managerial skills, Deeney seems to suggest a significant shift might be necessary for West Ham.

The Hammers find themselves facing a two-pronged challenge. First, they must address the fans’ concerns about the home stadium’s atmosphere. Second, they may need to navigate a substantial squad rebuild in the summer transfer window. Deeney’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the issues West Ham needs to tackle.

Went to plenty of games over Upton Park where you could hear a pin drop, so this comparison is starting to get boring now in all honesty. Any club has it’s boring games and there’s many of factors contributing to the decibels of the vans i.e. occasion, opponent and the way the team is performing. We have our off days as any other clubs fans do, but we also get the stadium rocking when we’re in the mood.

I’m assuming Deeney wasn’t a spectator during the Leverkusen home leg or a few other nights such as Sevilla and pretty much any game against Spurs. Not sure what his problem is with the club but Vicarage Road hardly left you with ‘goosebumps’ either.

      Exactly! Well written.

You are completely right. I now live in Edinburgh but was a season ticket holder at the Boleyn for 13 years. Wigan at home on a cold February night…..no atmosphere. KAA Gent last year (with my boys) cracking. I also took the eldest to see the 4-3 won at home to Huddersfield a few years ago and that was really good.

It is what you are seeing on the pitch that creates atmosphere. I’d love a stadium like Spurs…but considering how much the stadium cost the club it’s pretty good.

I’ve been saying exactly the same thing for some time now. Totally agree!

Who seriously takes notice of anything the jailbird thug Deeney thinks? It is what it is and we’re stuck with it. But you’d at least read the article if Deeney was known to be a tad more knowledgeable. He’s lucky he never tried to break anyone’s leg at Upton Park back in the day. He’d not have been happy the pitch was close and the atmosphere was better because he probably wouldn’t have got away from the lads in the chicken run without a reminder what a **** he was. Or worse.

In my opinion you have got these two priorities the wrong way round!
