Downes: I have to get better!

|

Flynn Downes insists he must get better if he is to realise his dream of playing for England.

The summer signing from Swansea is starting to show what he can do in a claret and blue shirt, having impressed in the Europa Conference League, and he has been rewarded with starts in the Premier League too.

He is yet to carve out a niche as a regular starter under David Moyes but he is behind both Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.

Downes could make his third successive start against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, and he is hoping to do exactly that, although he has admitted that he needs to improve if he is to come into Gareth Southgate’s thinking.

Speaking to Sky Sports, via The Sun, Downes said: “I just enjoy it.

“Wherever he wants me to play, I play. There really is nothing better. I’m not in my prime, I have so much to give. I’ve got to get a lot better.

“I want to play for England.

“That’s my dream. Dec is doing that now – I am learning a lot from him.”

Downes has played for England at U20 level, winning six caps at that level, but has never played for the U21s.
