Former Hammer spared jail

|

newtonA former Hammer who burgled a flat while drunk and high on cocaine has been spared jail after telling a Surrey court he believed he was taking part in a treasure hunt. Ex-West Ham midfielder Shaun Newton said he had not slept for two days when he was caught trying to take keys from the property in Mitcham.

Newton told Kingston crown court the incident was part of his 40th birthday celebrations, which had stretched across a whole year.

“I was in some treasure hunt or I thought it was, I was looking for the rest of the clues to solve the puzzle. It was a long weekend and I was tired and disorientated and confused by the tricks that were played on me at the time.I was led to believe there was a car, a Range Rover or whatever, and I was hunting for it. I pulled apart my whole house looking for keys. There were things in my house leading me to number plates, stuff like that and I was led to believe I had to do certain things like breaking glass.”

SNNewton, from Streatham, denied burglary but was found guilty by a jury. Recorder Ian Peddie QC sentenced him to 100 hours’ community service, telling him: “It’s clear you were high on cocaine and alcohol and maybe that’s why you committed the burglary. Fortunately, nothing was taken and in the witness box you gave a bizarre account of your actions, enough to cause the jury and myself to be concerned about your mental health.”

Alex Radley, defending, said Newton “has not found his feet after football… he now lives a day-to-day hand-to-mouth existence.”
