Sullivan’s Steidten gamble

West Ham chairman David Sullivan will be taking a massive risk if he decides against taking the advice of Tim Steidten.

According to another report from The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg, West Ham have held “productive” talks with Lopetegui over replacing Moyes, and it’s added that co-chairman Sullivan is personally “likely” to hire him if he ignores other board members advising him against the move.

It’s a fascinating insight into the workings behind the scenes at West Ham. It’s difficult to know who the other board members are whom Hammers fan Steinberg is referring to, but it’s safe to assume Director of Football Tim Steidten would not be too pleased.

To put it bluntly, Steidten knows what he’s doing and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Europe’s top coaches. Furthermore, he’s been there and done it before as part of the Bayer Leverkusen team that hired Xabi Alonso.

Sullivan may regret not heeding Steidten's advice

Sullivan’s Steidten gamble? West Ham could risk losing Tim Steiden by ignoring his advice

It would be extremely foolhardy not to listen to the advice of an expert on the West Ham payroll. It would be akin to hiring Gordon Ramsay as head chef then asking him to make a nice cup of tea while I cracked on with the gourmet stuff.

This also runs the risk of isolating the man who was clearly recruited to oversee a new dawn for West Ham. I’d imagine Steidten was incredibly frustrated to see his attempts to sign Ibrahim Osman undermined while David Moyes succeeded in recruiting Kalvin Phillips for mega money.

Steidten has clearly waited patiently in the wings for Moyes to depart the club so that he can implement his vision. While I wouldn’t be so crass as to label Lopetegui as a Spanish version of David Moyes, he’s clearly not the man to hire if the desired team is an attacking one populated with academy players.

Its typical Sullivan, taking the cheapest option even though it is not the best move for the club. West Ham will never progress to the next level while the two bob rag and man stays in charge!!

Let’s sit tight and see what happens
    .be cool

Dunno why any of us are surprised at the calamitous way we stumble from pillar to post. Supported the club for over half a century and nothing but nothing changes, save the breath of fresh air Mr Steidten appears to have brought.it matters not though, Sullivan and the rest won’t listen

Typical Sullivan, does the same thing every year especially around season ticket renewal time, especially if numbers are low.
Throw out a few big name rumours, get the Fanbase juices running, then ultimately go the Poundland route.
David, wind your neck in, sit back and let them that know better have a go for a change, Club performance and standing will improve, Fans will respond accordingly.

  • John says:

Lopetegui is not the answer. Is he a young, dynamic forward thinking coach with a high press, attacking ethos who has a track record for developing and bringing through young academy players? Answer – NO! He’s just another Moyes.

  • Hugh Jars says:

Please Sullivan, sell your shares and take Brady with you!!!!!!!
Until new owners are brought in, Steiden will be pushed to the back. Sullivan is all about what is in his pocket. Greedy little man!

If it’s decided that Suillvan selection is Lopetugui than I ask, Why hire Tim Steidten?, why have an academy?, Instead of pretending you want evolution, stop keeping Tim has a hostage, let ALL the youngest go because they WILL get first team at the hammers, let them have a chance of 1st team elsewhere and carry on buying old or average ayers around the 20 plus mark give them huge wages and huge contracts for 3 to 5 years with no chance of any sell on and let A and his football agents pull your pants down again and again and again

If WHU was an investment company, its track record in buying and selling “ assets” would have had the Board and at least two Managers sacked long ago. The money we have wasted on players, old and young, in recent years is almost criminal. Now we have someone that knows a decent player ( and a decent Manager), I have no doubt we will ignore his advice completely.

Owners can be extremely egotistical, in the case of Sullivan, he will think everyone would be praising Steidten for hiring his choice of manager, what Sullivan needs to remember is that HE himself is the genius who appointed Steidten to his position, which in I believe every single Wedt Ham fans opinion, was an absolute master stroke. A move that has the majority of fans from the majority of team absolutely jealous. Let the man You brought in, do what he’s best at, what You brought him here to do. He is the man to pick the manager and players for this team. And no one is ever gonna forget, who picked Steidten. Amazing job Mr Sullivan. (don’t screw it up, please)
