Freiburg 1 West Ham 2: Player ratings

|

Fabianski:6 made a great save just before the equaliser. Didn’t have an awful lot to do.

Coufal:6 Possibly could have done better for Freiburg’s goal.

Mavropanos:7 Made an early error but was quick enough to rescue the situation. Got a knock following a clash of heads with Alvarez. Won’t be long until his first goal arrives.

Aguerd:8 Played in third gear and it was still good enough. Scored West Ham’s second with a great header. Outstanding long range passing.

Freiburg 1 West Ham 2: Paqueta scored West Ham’s first goal.

Kehrer:5 Started the game at left back and looked comfortable enough in the first half. Got worse as the game went on, not sure we’ll see him in that position again.

Alvarez:7 Experienced and knows all the tricks.

Ward Prowse:7 Excellent rescue interception on the 40 min mark thwarted an attack. Yet another assist as his corner was nodded in by Aguerd.

Paqueta:9 Wonderful header from Bowen’s cross put West Ham ahead. Had another goal ruled out for offside moments later and a decent penalty claim. In top form and on a different level to everyone else.

Fornals:4 Impressively hard working performance. Unfortunately his first touch didn’t match his endeavour.

Kudus:6 Incredible solo dribble early in the game. Hit the post following a goalkeeping error. Slowed the game down at times, clearly not used to playing a counter attacking game. Pulled a good shot just wide.

Bowen:8 Started in a central position. Drifted out wide and produced a sublime cross for West Ham’s opener. Unlucky with a header. Missed a good chance at the end following more Paqueta magic.

Substitutes

Emerson: 71st min sub for Kehrer. Instantly better.

Soucek: 71st min sub for Fornals. Sat in and helped out defensively.

Benrahma: 80th min sub for Kudus.

Mubama: 90th min for Ward Prowse

Ings: 90th min for Paqueta

Just shows how urgent left back cover is. Not fair or realistic to ask Kehrer to play there as a one off. Moyes seems to be treating him like he did Ben Johnson – in and out in three different positions then deemed not good enough. The fact is not having cover for Emerson is not good enough, so roll on January.
