Former West Ham player Frank McAvennie didn’t hold back his criticism of the Hammers’ defense following their 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Despite securing a draw that dented Liverpool’s title hopes, West Ham’s backline came under heavy fire from McAvennie.

West Ham got off to a good start with Jarrod Bowen’s first-half header. However, their lead was short-lived as Liverpool responded quickly.

Goals from Andy Robertson and an own goal by Alphonse Areola gave Liverpool temporary control of the match. West Ham managed to fight back through Michail Antonio’s header, but the defensive frailties were a concern.

McAvennie was particularly critical of Kurt Zouma and the other centre-backs, suggesting their performances were “awful.” He also questioned the defensive contributions of Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson.

With upcoming fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester City, a strong defensive performance will be crucial for West Ham. We do need some improvement if the Hammers want to end the season on a positive note
