Hammers left back crisis deepens as Inter pip Tim to signing

Inter Milan seem to have secured the signing of Mario Hermoso, reportedly beating of competition from West Ham and Aston Villa. Whilst no official announcement has been made, Italian media outlets have indicated that Hermoso has signed a pre-contract agreement, and it’s not with West Ham.

Hammers director of football Tim Steidten was reportedly in talks with the player’s representatives ahead of a potential move next season.

Hermoso’s versatility as a defender, capable of playing at left-back or centre-back, would have been appealing to West Ham. With concerns in central defense due to Nayef Aguerd’s expected departure and Angelo Ogbonna’s contract situation, his signing could have addressed crucial gaps in the backline.

Moreover, Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson are both out of contract at The London Stadium, leaving West Ham with no cover for Emerson at left-back. The club will surely be disappointed to have missed out on the opportunity to secure the Spanish international Hermoso.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Hermoso has impressed everyone at Inter, giving the Nerazzurri confidence that they have beaten the Hammers to the Atletico Madrid defender, despite potential higher contract offers from us and Aston Villa.

Hermoso’s contract with Atletico Madrid is set to expire at the end of the season, and it’s reported that the club won’t be offering the 28-year-old a new deal.
