Hammers weigh up Pelle replacements

|

Chris Hughton remains a marginal favourite to should the board decide to fire Manuel Pellegrini as first reported in ClaretandHugh.

But although Bournemouth may be approached for permission to talk to fans favourite Eddie Howe, there are no great expectations the 41 year old will be ready to leave the south coast where he has spent most of his career in the game.

The attitude currently is “you don’t know until you try” but all are aware that Howe loves living in Bournemouth and that he’s unlikely to be ready for a switch of club.

Beyond a two season spell at Burnley, Howe has spent 25 years in the area as a player and manager with the Cherries, Porsmouth and Swindon and has shown no ambition to leave the club.

Rafa Benitez is also a non starter for the job and even were he to be sacked in China after a poor run of results he would prefer to make a move to Everton where Marco Silva is on thin ice given the various roots he has in Liverpool including a house on the Wirral.

Hughton heads the list of favoured candidates although Sean Dyche is also in the frame although compensation would be due should he be appointed given his contract runs out in 2022 at Turf Moor.

  • Gee Unit says:

The prospect of Chris Hughton is possibly the most depressing thing I have ever heard. A massive step backwards if it happens.

    • Conor says:

Chris Hughton is an excellent manager.

    • Gavin Clarke says:

No not Hughton, need a manager with ambition and passion, Steven Gerrard, I wouldnt mind, if I’m honest, young, enthusiastic and hates losing.

    • Robert Paul Bass says:

I may have been interested in Hughton after Sam went, but not now, can’t see him coping with the expectations of our fan base. I am struggling a bit to come up with a name. Some believe Mildew would run back, other than that, Tony Pulis? Both know the league and not working. Too soon for Scott Parker, even more so for Cowley, names I’ve seen put forwards by others

    • Alan says:

If it happens and we go for Houghton then I will give up my season ticket

    • Hammerkip says:

      I totally agree..he is awful

  • Hammerkip says:

If Chris houghton is the best they can come up with ,I give up …..it’s just the cheap option…..time for a break

  • David Norton says:

With this board hughton it will be cheap and no compensation payable and the dazzle hype spouted about ex West Ham to fool fans

      • Robert Paul Bass says:

Realistically, anyone in a job is probably out of the running, you are left with Pardew who some believe would run back, Tony Pulis who many in our fan base see as yesterdays dinosaur. Would be happy to see Moyes back, just cannot see see it. Lack of experience rules out Scott Parker, and why would he ruin his West Ham legacy. Don’t believe Sullivan really considered this could happen

  • Ajay says:

Assuming it would be a “firefighting” appointment to maintain PL status, then Hughton is the no brainer option. Currently out of work, therefore no compensation payment to be made, has PL experience and would definitely stabilise the current slide.
Long term? Who in their right mind would contemplate the job? Far too many negative aspects for a sensible person to consider whilst the present incumbents remain in control.

  • Saul says:

If Hughton comes in then it will just go to show that we are a club who takes the cheapest option over the best outcome. I thought all of that was in the past after Pelle joined. There are many other names out there. Hughton’s tactics are far too negative and he’s never shown he’s a manager who can cut it at the top level

      • Fugmaster says:

Agree with the Steve Gerrard comment, earlier; he’s young, ambitious and will take no prisoners, and this current squad needs a kick up the backside to get them.pmating again. Give him a long-term contract, tied in with either a plan to buy and totally redevelop that awful London Stadium ( which isn’t helping things), or preferably a plan to build our own elsewhere. No short term has-been foreign journeyman, please.

      • Saul says:

Sorry Hugh, I commented instead of replying to your question!! See below…

  • Kenny Irons says:

Chris Hughton – sacked by Brighton but good enough for West Ham – sounds about right.
It will kick-off massively, if they appoint him.
A very nice bloke, but too weak and not good enough, simple as that.
Sean Dyche, Chris Wilder for me – the players are getting away with it every week by not turning up, need a kick up the backside and some discipline needs to be shown,
Two or three players exempt from the above comment………
NB: Did read that a friend of Eddie Howe said he might be interested – let’s hope there is some substance in that !

  • John Bishop says:

    What about Pochettino?

  • Philip says:

Hughton can do one. I refuse to watch a team managed by him. The board wouldn’t survive that backwards thinking. And that’s a fact.
Howe has to be the priority, even Dyche or that sh**f Utd guy would actually change tactics unlike Pellers

  • Hammer64 says:

Bournemouth record in 2019 is even worse than ours!

I wonder if a lower division manager is the most realistic option. Wilder has done ok with no PL experience, & on present showing we may be a lower division side anyway in six months. Going for managers with glowing CVs based on inheriting star studded squads has not worked. Of those mentioned I suppose I would opt for Hughton (if Rafa is really ruled out) but maybe we have to be more imaginative & look further afield.

  • Artran says:

Throw another hat into the managerial ring, what about John Terry

  • Whuduck says:

    Klopp or harry rednapp 😂😂

  • PAUL GARNER says:

dyche from burnley 100 per cent
    dont want hughton or benitez

  • Michael L says:

I think they should bring someone in for till the end of the season and then go for a permanent signing in the summer where they have time to do what they want.
I think they should promote Terry westley to 1st team coach he knows these players better than anyone and push the youth into the 1st team. Wont cost anything to the club.

  • DPC says:

If we are poaching other Premiership managers I would opt for Nuno Espirito Santo from Wolves.

  • Dave says:

I would go for Marcelo BIesla.
Has done miracles at Leeds, they play energetic forward thinking football.
Work the hardest I’ve seen any team in recent years.
Plays youth and is well respected in Europe so could attract good players.
Would have loads of room to put his bucket down at our ground!
And he’s slightly mad, so would fit well.
Get Di Canio as his number 2 and watch them train then!!

  • Phil says:

Hopefully it wont be Chris Houghton, living in Sussex I have many Brighton season ticket holder friends who last year were not so much critical of his efforts, but berated the style of play being ultra defensive at home against many teams they could reasonably be expected to win points..

Whilst we need to stay up, i really don’t want to go back to that style of play.

  • Phil says:

I’d love either Erik ten Hag (Ajax) or Julian Nagelsmann (Leipzig)…..sadly i don’t think either could happen

  • J hamblett says:

Would love jack and joe till end of season then go from there but I don’t think it happen after 44 years of football thinking of doing something else as like the players and owners I can’t be bothered to put. In effort #homeless What I would give to Upton Park back

  • teddy salad says:

Did we ever get a result against Chris Hughtons Brighton?

  • Farehamhammer says:

Chris Hughton is a backward step and is a no for me.I don’t agree that Eddie Howe would not join us at all.I visit Bournemouth a lot and there is talk of money problems behind the scenes,so who knows .However it is going to be tough to replace MP .Does anyone seriously believe that any top rated manager would want to come to The Club in the state we’re in ?NOT in a million years .Another problem is that when you appoint a new manager he invariably wants his own backroom staff and players. That would mean adding a fortune to the wage bill.Sell this player and that player ,easier said than done !Good luck in getting top dollar for the dross stealing a living .I believe that we need to sort this mess out THEN APPOINT A NEW MANAGER !I would bring in someone like Pardew on a short term contract ,similar to Moyes .He knows the Club and could get us on a sound footing. Not exciting I know but lets get back on a even keel first. We are more than a football club ,we’re a way of life !!COYI!!

  • DB69WHU says:

Not as though it really matters what I think but I would go all in for Pochettino, done well at Southampton & Spuds. I think he would get the best from the current squad & does seem to have more in the locker than a plan A, the alternative plan A or I know I`ll stick with plan A. It`s whether the Dave`s could seal the deal, no compo though & could offer better wages than Levy had him on.
I feel to be in the lucky older group who have seen two FA cup wins, seven Wembley appearances early 80`s (when it actually meant a final), some great games in the cup winners cup when we had a team that lost 1-3 at UP & went to Spain & turned over Castilla 1-4 at theirs. So it wasn`t madness to think we could turn over Dynamo Tbilisi`s 1-4 as well. Apologies I digress back to days when players played for the badge & teams were only allowed to field three foreign players & I seem to remember Brit teams did ok in Europe back then. I never normally post anything but the situation is despairing with the lack of passion. Have to keep on dreaming though!!!

  • master says:

Some of the fantasy responses on this thread. Hilarious.

    Just go get Dyche.

  • TP says:

Opta Stats: WH have been outrun by the opposition in every single Premier League game that they have played this season. Obvious to every fan, why not to the Manager and the Owners??

  • Hicksey says:

Chris Hughton is a nice bloke. Same as Eddie Howe. But both too nice to motivate our latest team of lazy mercenaries.

  • Saul says:

I honestly would love to see Rafa but it looks implausible. What he did with Newcastle was nothing short of miraculous. Gerrard would be a curveball but wouldn’t leave before end of the season. I’d also like to see Graham Potter but compensation would be an issue. Bielsa? Wenger? Any of the above
