How we rated the Hammers at Spurs

|

Hughie hands out the marks

Areola: Two or three decent saves early and maybe harsh but possibly should have done better for the winner 6

Ashby: His learning curve started here and there’s was plenty of good and a helping of average but make no mistake he’s a real player 6

Johnson: Played on the right side of the middle three and looked fine on his return to action 7

Diop: He’s done ok since he came back and looked the part for long periods tonight 6

Dawson: Rarely let’s himself down – some fine interventions but played his part like one or two others in allowing the winner 6

Masuaku: Always exposed at left back and letting the opposition know exactly where to attack the Hammers. Little offensively 3

Lanzini: Disappointing. As a creative player he really needs to have a bigger impact on games 4

Vlasic: Would like to see him involved a lot more because whenever he was he looked likely to make things happen 6

Soucek: He looked much more effective getting forward and might have had a couple with better luck 7

Rice: Played his heart put again and a quality performance but we so need a striker to feed off him 8+

Bowen: Great goal and another hugely  energetic performance 8

Subs:

Benrahma Promised much produced little apart from one great shot which flew wide

Yarmolenko: Seemed to try a bit harder tonight but in the end little to show for anything

With you Hugh, Ashby did fine yet plenty to develop, Liked Vlasic and waiting for a step, Lanzini good but has been bolder, Arthur always a worry. We need a striker all right. Having said all that, a bit better tracking on the goals and it could have been us going on

The back 5 with the exception of Dawson and Ashby (did well) were dire, I am a huge fan of Diop and I always hoped he prove it but tonight for me he was very poor. I do not want to see Masuaka play for us again and I just do not understand how Johnson is so rated, he was awful tonight so many mistakes it was incredible. The rest of the team played their part but it was our defending that cost us tonight. We were the better team.

Can’t disagree with much of that but a little harsh on Masuaku I feel. He got no protection from the midfield, and played as well as Johnson imho.
