How we rated the Hammers on an historic night

|

Areola: Little to do all night but one spectacular save was one we will remember for a very long time – moving left he punched a fierce drive away with his right fist – amazing and worth an 8 for that alone.

Johnson: Very adequate performance down the right side supported by Dawson at times. Needs to sharpen up his crossing into the box 7

Dawson: Kept it very simple at the heart of defence, producing some out balls to Johnson in a bid to get things started down the right 7

Zouma: In the headlines for all the wrong reason pre-match he did everything right on the pitch keeping it all so composed to restrict Sevilla’s forwards 7+

Cresswell: Some strong attacking stuff as we have become used to and did well at the back 7

Rice: Does so little wrong but maybe a tad quieter than we’ve become used to but he was all over the place as breaking stuff up and setting up  great attacking movement 8

Soucek: Probably his best game of the season. Scored a fine headed goal, might have had a second early in the second but missed one in extra time. Pushed forward well whilst defending really well at times 8

Fornals: He had one of those good, bad and indifferent games . One awful moment when he hit the first  defender with his cross  as three or four Irons moves into Sevilla’s box but also some fine passing and movement. 7

Benrahma: One terrific ball through with Mikey should have converted early. Another of those games for him where there was more potential than power. 7

Lanzini: Saw several shots blocked and is such a fine team player now rather than the individualist creator who joined the club 7

Antonio: Brilliant assist for the first goal and always had the defenders panicking when he got on the ball. Not everything came off for him but he was a real threat and hold up play was often excellent 7+

Subs:

Yarmolenko: Magical magical moment as the man of the moment in the middle of such sadness clinched a place in the quarter finals 10

Noble: Came on late presumably as penalties looked likely. Lovely moment for such a great servant 5

Diop: End of extra time arrival No rating

David Moyes rating = 10. What a team spirit he has created. Great organization. Who would have thought in December 2019 that he would not only pick up the pieces, but drive us on to high after high? Superb manager. Long may this continue. Will Barcelona fancy some of that? I doubt it. COYI.

Lingard zero – but you could have had some of this instead of reading comics on the Man U bench matey!

    Two big takeaways for me:
    1. Ariola was absulety superb. That incredible save, but also commanding and communicating the box, gets of his line to catch crosses and tries to start the game early.
    2. Has Moyes fixed the Dec/Soucek problem? Last two games they are both offensive and defensive?

Agree with the ratings, although IMHO, Antonio was inspired, deserved an 8+.

While it’s not a time to be picky after such a win, but did anyone else notice that the Referee favoured Sevilla in most of the decisions?
It took until 42nd minute for him to award West Ham a free kick…. and the second ?? Not until extra time.
That is 1 free kick Vs 10 the other way….

blimeylimey, I don’t think that you’re being picky as it is something I have OFTEN noticed and picked up on….. but it’s a bias that never seems to be mentioned or even explained.
I also agree regarding Antonio (8+), as teams hate to face him and although he didn’t score, our threat is based upon what he brings to our attack, which also gives other players more space and opportunity to score.

      Are we Massive?…….. You Bet!
