How we rated the Irons at Leicester

|

NIall McDonold hands out his marks

Randolph: Positioning for the first debatable but no chance with the 2nd or 4th. Fine save from Perez and magnificent save from Maddison – that’s why we signed him (twice) 7
Diop: Looked a little ragged at times, at other moments ball-watched 5
Ogbonna: Headed balls away, stuck legs out, hoofed it clear – did very well before conceding the spot kick 7

Cresswell must return

Cresswell: Defended manfully against the blue tide, taking on corner duty after the break 8
Zabaleta: Got into the Leicester area once in the first-half; effectively played fullback for the full 90 mins 5
Rice: Tough going against the movement of Leicester tonight 5
Noble: A vital penalty stuck away very calmly – really stretched in open play though  5
Masuaku: Slow to track back for the first and miles out of position for the 2nd. Really poor 3
Lanzini: Really struggling at the moment. Tried to support Haller early-on but just missing the buzz of a season or two ago 4
Snodgrass: Completed the first half after taking a knock to the left knee. A few corners swung in too close to Schemichel 5
Haller: Did everything in his power to win the penalty and the contribution seemed to give him a lift, so much so he fouled an opponent on 68 mins 6

Subs
Antonio: Won an aerial challenge, picked up the return and blazed over in the first seconds after his introduction – all action stuff and dear me it was needed 8
Fornals: Spirited 2nd half appearance 5

Manager:
No surprises with the starting formation but the first-half display was shocking. Positive substitutions and presumably a real rollicking at the interval provoked a positive reaction. Really got his work cut out this time round 6

Totally overrun in midfield and it could have been worse believe me.And still no signings.Same problems in same positions and the owners fiddle whilst Rome burns .Its a disgrace.

    • Is not at all possible for anyone to accept that this may be as much a managerial thing in the market?

      • Hammers64 says:

It’s down to a lack of hindsight Hugh.Just compare the 2 teams tonight. One team is built the other is make do and mend. The same problems in midfield and down the flanks and it boils down to a lack of investment. Its nothing new and Moyes has a right mess to sort

        • Don’t think it’s even a proper comparison – there are many worse than Leicester

        • Hammers64 says:

We were both on a par when promoted at the same time so it is very valid. My point is look how far Leicester have progressed whilst this club has stagnated. You are missing the point here.We could be where Leicester are now but the owners have never invested properly to move this club on.

      • Stubbo says:

How do you mean Hugh? Suggesting Moyes is the reason no incoming, despite him saying early on he wanted 4 players? (RB, CM, CF, GK)

Do we have the players identified and scouted and the ground work in place to bring guys in? Surely in every position there should be 10-12 viable players identified.

This is where the lack of DoF structure done properly is a failure and that is on Brady as CEO charged with getting the club running effectively. Changing the manager can’t be allowed to kill all the workings of the club. Recruitment needs to continue in its processes independent of the manager.

It’s all so blindingly obvious! But Sullivan wants to keep his hand in and not relinquish control, and the way our club is setup is lime something out of the 1980s.

  • master says:

Snodgrass corners swung in too close to their keeper?

THATS BECAUSE ALL OF OUR PLAYERS JUST STAND IN THR 6 YARD BOX WITHOUT MAKING ANY KIND OF RUN OR MOVEMENT

  • Sullywhu says:

Be touch and go to stay up… I’m worried after that Embarrassing 1st half display… Lost for words

  • master says:

Can we please be honest with ourselves.

A midfield 2 pairing of Rice and Noble will never control games in the premier league unless something is going badly wrong with the opposition.

Out of those 2, Rice is not the person to be pointing fingers at.

    His time is up.

I love him, but any team with noble as a starting midfielder for nearly 10 years is never ever ever ever going to progress beyond mediocre. He has a limit and we have played up to it for years and never progressed beyond. We never ever ever control the middle of the park. Ever.

Oh and Lanzini is utterly rubbish. Bottles every tackle and does stop any runners against him. His lack of challenge today lead to two of their goals. Watch it back far enough in the replays, you’ll see he doesn’t stop attacks. And he certainly doesn’t start them. Or finish them. But he is finished as a player.

  • Frank Reed says:

8 for Cresswell, you have got to be not well mate, for the last 2 seasons, most of goals conceded come down he’s flank, tonight he was embarrassing. Do you understand how a football is played on a full size pitch?

  • johnham1 says:

I never rated Moyes so to say he has disappointed me would be wrong as I had no expectations. I have lost all faith in the board for appointing him. Tonight again was him at his best should I say worse. The formation was correct but his selections were dire. Firstly Ogbonna is not a sweeper so must play on the left of the back 3. Cressell cannot play in a back 3. Noble cannot play in a midfield too. Snodgrass is too slow on the ball. And finally he plays only one up top. Haller has something about him but he needs to play in a 2. Moyes is in my opinion totally placing his trust in the wrong players in the likes of Noble, Snodgrass etc. We are in big trouble if this continues which I believe will with this manager. How he has scored 6 is a joke. We had 28% possession in the first half, had no shot on target. He made the right subs but makes a huge mistake in changing formation. He just does not see it. The only way we will survive is if the board sign the 3 right players in this window that we need. I believe they wont and that is why I want something to change at board level. With the correct signings even with a poor manager we may get out of it. It is time to put Noble, Snodgrass on the bench before it is too late, Lets start playing 2 up top.

  • mark wiggins says:

We are terrible so it was Bilic fault , it was Moyes fault it was Pelligrini fault and now Moyes fault again . I’m sorry Hugh but the problems start at the top a lack of net spend in the squad. We have no depth , no pace and no energy the team needs investment . The players giving PR over the last few weeks about how much better it is under Moyes but that doesn’t show on the pitch. Every player can do more off the ball and support the front Haller remains isolated . So the players going to start blaming Moyes now rather than except responsibility .? Moyes himself is also deluded about how good some of how performances have been no only one performance against a poor Bournemouth . We need investment and a change from the top down. We will be lucky to stay up unless we improve and quickly.

    • nothing to do with the players then?

      • Hammer56 says:

Everything to do with the players Hugh. We have no other players to replace the players who are letting us all down that is because we have such a small squad after the clear out of last summer. I don’t no why this was allowed to happen by the board.

        • I think you may find the board had nothing to do with it as they had stepped back – as asked -and allowed Husillos and Pelle to decide. I know that’s not convenient for many to recall – and I’ll be subject to the same stupid attacks no doubt – but it is actually the truth

          • Martin says:

Pellegrini wanted those players sold…..or had to sell because of a limited budget? I suspect the latter and this is down to the fact we have not increased our revenue to the extent the business plan budgeted for when we moved stadium. We have have fallen way below expectations for 4 consecutive seasons under 3x managers and goodness knows how many players. The consistency in the components of the club are the Board. They did a great job in sorting us out following their takeover, dug deep to ensure we got promoted after the disastrous appointment of Avram and then made numerous poor decisions since then…..managers, execution of stadium move, budgeting of significant uplift in revenues, managing expectations (eg Gold twice stating this was the best squad he had ever seen at BCFC/WHU and expected challenging for the Champions League). Yes, managers and players can be blamed………but since our move you have to look at the leadership of the club. If the managers have failed then who appoints the managers. If the players have failed, who sanctioned the purchase of the players…….accepting Pell and H may have had control the past 3x windows! Who provided the budgets to buy the players………or more to the point who provided a business plan that would enable us to move up to the next level financially and failed thus ensuring we do not have the budget to move up to the next level? The Board.

          • Stubbo says:

This maybe true, but you can place blame at the boards feet for fudging the implementation of the director of football model who is meant to be the manager’s boss, not his mate. When the manager goes the DoF is supposed to stay and provide rectuitment and footballing direction consistency, as we’ll as being responsible for finding the new manager.

Also dont forget it was the board who hired Pellegrini and repeated their error of favouring experience over anything else, which continually sees them hire managerial dinosaurs out of touch with the modern game.

      • mark wiggins says:

Yes Hugh as I said every player can do more and accept responsibility lack of energy etc . However I stick with the view the team lack pace and needs investment and that investment can only come from the top .Don’t want to see us relegated but things need to change on the pitch with more energy but the team need that player with energy.

  • mojen says:

Quite frankly on tonights performance i see no hope of avoiding relegation. Our only hope is to sign at least 3 players NOW. We all know what positions- even then i think its doubtful we will stay up.This is not Moyes fault, Just look at our team. Not great in my opinion. Why is Lanzini playing ? How much did we pay for Haller ? Etc etc.

  • Ajw306 says:

Masuaku a three? he was the only person in the first half having the confidents to be on the ball, granted it doesn’t always work out for him when trying to take on players but he was always trying to push forward, which will cost him defensively sometimes. The last 2 times we got relegated I remember watching us get a 5-1 thumping I think it was against man u, I know at that point we would go down. This game and team reminded me of the that specific point, a run of games coming which will be extremely hard to build momentum which I believe is key. Hoping we find a magic buy like we did with hartson and kitson that year, otherwise relegation looks more and more likely which is painful to admit. Our owners will take the brunt of this as last time we went down United, this time for alot they believe the soul of the club has been left back at the boleyn ground, others were believing the OS would make our pipe dream true of westham glory. Gonna be close

  • Hammer1968 says:

Which game were you watching? Cresswell 8? He spends half his time with his hand in the air trying to claim offside against a player who’s easily given him the slip. A liability every game he plays.
You gave both Noble and Rice 5? Rice is covering every blade of grass trying to correct Nobles lack of pace and ability! Time everyone realised that he is not a Captain that will lead us out of this mess. Unfortunately Declan will be playing his football in the premiership with Man Utd next season and Noble will find his level and will be leading this pile of crap out in the championship.

  • Darren says:

I’m not really sure how these ratings apply to how a player preformed in a game but in the real world to a employee or player should be expected to be at least a 5 to be a everyday player in what every they are expected to do….I saw no one but Randolph above that
