How we rated the Irons in Lyon

|
Gonzo hands out the marks
Areola: 9 Not an awful lot to do due to the shield in front of him but made a great save to deny Gusto

Coufal: 9 Tried to link up with Bowen where possible and provided good balance on the right.
Dawson: 11 A brick wall. Great block to thwart a Dembele attempt. Fantastic run and header for the opening goal. A hero and a serious HOTY contender. He’s incredible.
Diop: 10 Seemed to relish the early exchanges and took a good booking for the team. Really looked the part and was equally as good as the absent Zouma.
Johnson: 10 Incredibly mature start to the game and looked like a senior left-back. Created the second goal. Amazing contribution.
Rice: 10 Looked off the pace at the start of the game but was positioned perfectly to score West Ham’s second from Johnson’s great work. Got better and better.
Soucek: 9 Gave the ball away in a dangerous area which Lyon didn’t exploit. Struggled to win his trademark headers early on but really grew into the game.
Lanzini: 9 A great contest with Ndombele and looked to create at every opportunity. Made the team tick and linked everything together.
Fornals: 10 Some sloppy passing but lots of hard work and tested the Lyon keeper early on then provided a perfect assist from the corner. Wonderful pass to Bowen for the third goal.
Bowen: 9 Looked lively and involved from the kick-off. His shot created the corner from the opener. Clinically scored the third with his weaker foot
Antonio: 9 Set the tone with an early flick-on and set-up a Bowen chance with a wonderful cross. Always looking to play his teammates in. An immense performance.
Noble: 9 On for Lanzini to take part in this special night.
Yarmolenko:  On late for the exhausted Antonio
Benrahma: Played injury time in place of Rice
Moyes: 10 I really don’t know what to say about this man, he’s transformed this club and I’d like to shake him by the hand (with the correct Covid protocols of course).
