How West Ham Turned A Problem Into A Triumph

Jarrod Bowen’s new contract has turned out to be a smart move by West Ham’s owners, one which has possibly turned an unhappy player into somebody motivated and feeling in control ahead of the upcoming season.

A Smart Negotiation

Make no mistake about it. The West Ham hierarchy did not need to offer Jarrod Bowen a new deal.

After all, he’s already under contract until 2030.

Daniel Křetínský had no intention of selling the player, so it would have been easy simply to say to Bowen: “You’re staying, end of story.”

But that would have created quite a nasty dynamic from the outset between the club captain and the new board.

In many respects, it would have been a situation where Bowen may have felt he was being held captive and was beholden to a club decision which didn’t necessarily match his own.

By renegotiating a new deal, albeit one containing a buyout clause, the club have turned a situation where they could have held a player hostage into one where there is a genuinely mutually beneficial outcome and a decision in which the player will have felt empowered.

Both Sides Gave Something

Both sides will have had to give some ground in such a negotiation.

From Bowen’s side, he is committing to playing a season at a level of football which, quite frankly, is below him.

From West Ham’s side, the club have agreed that if they’re not promoted at the first attempt, a buyout clause well below market value will kick in, enabling Bowen to sign for pretty much whoever he wants.

But that’s the art of a good negotiation.

Both parties gain something and both lose something.

I do think, in terms of this immediate season, West Ham are the winners.

I believe we now have a freshly motivated and rested player, as well as a really important symbol to send out to the other players at the club and to potential signings, that the Hammers have retained not only their captain and best player but somebody who, until three months ago, was a regular England international.

In essence, the whole thing screams ambition.

Everyone’s A Winner

If it works, we’ll be promoted and we’ll never hear about the buyout clause again.

If it fails, then Jarrod deserves to go, and as a club we really couldn’t ask any more from a player who has shown the ultimate loyalty.

Finally, I think the last concession came from Bowen himself.

There has been no increase in wages, which in itself is a huge benefit to West Ham as the club look to count the pennies following a massive drop in revenue that comes with Championship football.

All in all, one of those rare deals where, to quote Errol Brown, everyone’s a winner.
