Irons become set piece masters

|

West Ham suddenly became a serious threat from set pieces last night, one in particular of course leading to another Michail Antonio goal against Liverpool which was right out of the top drawer.

The quality of the goal was everything that the visitor’s wasn’t after Kevin Friend and his assistant had allowed that blatantly offside effort.

With the Irons noticing how the scousers to hold a high defensive line, Felipe Anderson planted a totally superb  free kick over the top allowing Michail to whip in and score with a brilliant angled shot.

It was a joy to watch and even to the casual observer clearly a well worked goal straight off the training ground – others followed but with less success.

We had unsettled them throughout and sadly despite a fantastic game otherwise Declan Rice missed with a brilliant header and Noble with a fierce shot but on that set piece we were supreme.

Said scorer Antonio to www.whufc.com: “We worked on the free-kick in training. We saw the space they leave behind them because they keep a high line. So we worked on that this week and it managed to work out for us.

“We know that they like to play through the middle and that when they cross they want to cross it along the ground.

“What we wanted to do was show them wide and counter attack on them.”

He added: “It’s an important point, it shows we can compete against the top six teams and now we need to do it against the teams around us.

“We need to not be complacent, keep pushing forward and be consistent. Obviously when you play the top six teams you know you need to be on top form otherwise you’ll be torn apart. So we need to have the same mentality when you play the teams around you.”
