David Moyes is determined that there should be no return to the old West Ham when the season gets underway tomorrow (Sun).
Far too often our history has been littered with brilliance and despair but under Moyes the objective is to retain last season’s consistency and move on.
That will bring great expectations down on the manager and squad’s head and Moyes knows that caution is therefore the watchword.
Asked by reporters what he saw as the “next step for Declan Rice and Co” he said: “Progression is now for that level of consistency to remain. Let’s be honest, we took that humongous leap last year with he season we had – probably nobody expected us to be where we are.
Let’s be fair, we did a great job. So We have to be careful that expectations that that are put on us on are not so great that they are so difficult for us to match.
But we are positive. We fancy our chances at the moment. We are in a good place.
We would like to make that (the squad) stronger but I am not going back to the days of getting players in who are only here because it makes the media and supporters feel good – because that doesn’t work.
Once we’ve signed milenkovic and lingard we just need a striker. Not sure if we will buy one or get one on loan but can’t see us not getting anyone.
