It’s too early to hoist a white flag

|

One game in against a very strong side – one defeat and according to many we are down!

Ok, I understand  it’s moaning that keeps us going in lock down times but it’s too early to hoist a white flag at this stage particularly as everybody realised how tough the first three games were gonna be,

The first 20 minutes against Wolves were deeply depressing and it looked as though we had never been away but we picked it up and had Fornals taken an outstanding chance – it could have been different – well never know.

The reality is we remain above Norwich, Villa and Bournemouth – who looked truly shocking on Saturday night – and before anyone shouts we shouldn’t be looking at other clubs, WE ALL DO IT.

Defensively we were sound for a long time against a team that now sits sixth and whom I reckon could well make it into Europe  via the Champions Cup – they really are that good.

There are those who would ignore the Traore effect but we had held on for a long time until his manager realised he needed more – he was the game changer.

With the miseries we have been suffering in the real world via Covid to be beaten on the PL’s return is truly making things so much worse but we never fancied the first three games so lets cut ourselves some slack.

Ogbonna could well be back for Tuesday allowing Declan to move forward and offer more from midfield.

It’s grim right now and we are looking for three teams worse than ourselves .

Tough times yes but let’s keep the faith. If pessimism, criticism and complaints against our team which has seen no action for over 100 days is people’s bag ok.

It ain’t mine. Keep the faith.

What is a worry is that Oggy and Seb were suddenly unavailable for the first game and that disrupted the entire spine of the team. Wolves looked so fit and sharp and broke quickly – to be honest we were the opposite scary times.

  • Artran says:

Not sure if I can find too much to have faith in. Sure we kept the game tight by getting 10 bodies behind the ball but showed no threat going forward and struggled throughout to match the physicality of our opponents. Heard a stat mentioned that we have the lowest figures for pocession in the league. If you can’t keep the ball then you have little chance of doing anything useful with it.

  • Mojen says:

If we continue in this manner its us Norwich and Bournemouth
Also if we are what we think we are why are we losing – regularly to a team like wolves ? Answer they are out of our league! Hope not . Next year We need a reality check. Under achievers doesn’t even start to answer the question. Why are so crap ?

  • Trevor says:

We have Moyes, a born loser, the worst record from a West Ham manager ever.
We have to accept if we stay up it’s by default that there are teams worse, we have the worse manager IN THE TOP FLIGHT.
We have no plan no idea no tempo no way of playing, Gold and Sullivan clearly raised the white flag when they appointed him.
Furlough him and bring in someone that has a clue, Pochachino for the last 8 matches, we’d probably win 5.

    • Julian Woodhouse says:

Come on Hugh, I understand the, “it’s the first game back” comment but then so it was for Wolves. They’ve had more than enough time to prepare to play a club we should be beating. We were atrocious, wrong owners, wrong manager and players who for me have all but raised the white flag. Even if we do stay up, what then, what will change. I love my club but this makes me weep, especially as we seem to be hoping for there to be 3 teams worse than us in order to survive. Don’t get me started on that whiny article in the Evening Standard by Noble, seems like he has the excuses lined up already. Football is 90% a mental game and less than convinced at their mental fortitude,

      • Take a look at the response below – it echoes mine. And, yepI was totally wrong about Pellegrini. I’m not ready to play the blame game Julian. pointmess and probably harmful to all concerned and i’m not sure how that helps anything

        • Julian Woodhouse says:

Hugh, always enjoy and respect your input and you might be right but if ever you should have been able to have expected effort and application then the first game after a break should have been it but I saw nothing and that was most disappointing.i looked at Wolves acteam that has rebuilt after years in the Championship and they seem to have really good owners a good manager and a really good team that works hard and has skill, we have none of that. For the first time I believe we do not deserve in remain in the EPL though I hope we do otherwise we will be irrelevant and in the most difficult league in the world to get out of…. Again!!

  • Dave says:

Hugh, blinkers on.Should have been at Ascot.
No pace, no clue, no heart and no one to change it.
    Shots on target ? 0
Playing at home, sorry at our athletics stadium 1 up front, sort of.
    Who will change this ?
One win in 10, nothing has changed.
What positive did you see ?

  • Jamie says:

Pathetic again. Typical David moyes drab surrender. Soucek is a magician and rice played well. Other then that can anyone else find a positive? We ship goals for fun and have NO pace at all down either wing or upfront if you exclude Antonio. The modern game has come on too far not to have over lapping fast wing backs and wingers. We’re in real trouble and it’s not me being pessimistic, it’s reality. Preach positive thinking all you want but moyes was the cheap call because he’s a puppet who will do as the owners want (that and we didn’t have to pay compensation) bear in mind he got the job having only had a 29% win rate and playing shocking football in his first stint. I’m saddened and embarrassed to be an irons fan. They’ve sold our home, sold our soul and all they’ve given us in return is weekly crap. When we were going for moyes Everton were going for ancelotti , talk of ambition and positive vibes?

  • GaryD says:

The white flag was up before kick-off. 4-2-3-1? Pellegrini still in charge?
Anderson passed the ball to Wolves more often than to his teammates. Should have been replaced at the half.
10 v 11 for most of the game.

  • Del PE. says:

Noble starting, highlighting our problems, ponderous, as per usual, Anderson a Brazilian fraud, no striker, ANTONIO IS A WIDE RIGHT Player AT BEST.. Bowen a no 10.. When you miss a Snodgrass you know you are in trouble. Formals so disappointing… Rice has to play midfield but like many of our other players lacks pace, but reads the game well.. Need a miracle but holding thumbs.

  • What i don’t realize is in truth how you’re now not really a lot more well-preferred than you may be right now.
You’re very intelligent. You understand thus significantly relating to this
subject, produced me personally believe it from numerous varied angles.

Its like women and men aren’t interested except it is something to accomplish with Lady gaga!
Your personal stuffs excellent. At all times maintain it up!

  • zahama says:

Last night’s game (well it was night here in SA) was deeply disappointing – agree that Anderson was the most disappointing of the lot – and in the absence of Haller and Ogbonna it is not easy to see how we could change this for Spurs (who seem to have played well vs Man Utd and are overdue a win). In his first spell Moyes hit (?stumbled?) on teh solution of Arnie as a central striker – maybe he needs to do the same again (?Yarmo as central striker) and play Antonio and Bowen wide in a 4-3-3. I feel that Lanzini, Fornals and Anderson are all a bit lightweight (tho the old Lanzini used to be able to hold on to the ball) – so perhaps we only play one of them at a time. For the Noble knockers – he was one of our few decent players so definitely needs to be there

We should be comparing ourselves with a team like Crystal Palace – one difference is stability – they have had Roy Hodgson while we have had SLav, Moyes, Pelle, Moyes

Why did Slav do so badly in his last season and a bit but is now doing well at WBA? What difference would Carvallo have made? We will never know – but are now in trouble and can only hope that the team does something in the next two games to lift our hopes

  • Rob says:

Well what can you say about the game not alot, wrong manager not a clue. We need to win games it is that simple. Get moyes out . If we don’t go down it will be pure luck and nothing else .

  • Mike says:

That was as poor as I have seen us play – clearly following the governments social distancing instruction we were at least 2 meters off every wolves player. Our midfield was overrun. They knew about traders pace but didn’t try and put extra help in for cress well ? Moyes I am afraid to say is taking us down just like Sunderland. Gotta say Hugh your player ratings are baffling. If we played well on that rating every player would have merited a 10.

  • Kevin says:

There isn’t a team in Premieship who would have fancied the first three games we have . Wolves are a fast , strong and technical team . As always and as usual there are those that just love critizing and fill the pages with doom & gloom . Still eight games to play , so waving white flags and pointing fingers is no way to support the team . Yes we need the three teams to be worse than us ,,,, that’s how relegation battles go and it’s the same for all teams down there in that grey murky part of the table . I don’t believe there are too many lessons to be learnt it’s just our squad needs strengthening and our injury list needs shortening .
Keep the faith . Hopefully it won’t come down to a relegation survival final between two claret&blue clubs . That would be excruciating .

    • Julian Woodhouse says:

Kevin, tell me how long we have been in the EPL v Wolves. We have had more than enough time to have built a team like Wolves but the club has poor owners who make poor choices that leads to guess what, poor outcomes. I only saw one team putting in effort and applying themselves yesterday and it wasn’t us, not even 2 shot on target, its not doom and gloom it is utter dejection at what we are, an incredibly poorly run club and team.

      • Wrong Julian, Wolves boss and top super agent are huge mates and have been throughout two or three decades and he takes him the best players around at the right prices. Well known in football. Blaming owners, managers etc is the simple easy option. pellegrini was a huge mistake but not many said so at the time did they?
