Kretinsky’s huge Europe blow

|

Daniel Kretinsky’s other team, Sparta Prague, have been dumped out of Europe!

The Czech side were in the Europa Conference League but they were beaten on Thursday by Partizan Belgrade in Serbia.

A brace from Ricardo Jorge Pires Gomes gave Partizan victory, although he was sent off in the 65th minute. Despite playing against 10 men, Sparta could only manage to score once, through Adam Hlozek in the 85th minute.

It meant that they were beaten 3-1 on aggregate and have subsequently been eliminated from the competition altogether.

It is a major blow for Kretinsky, who will have seen that the Hammers were drawn with Sevilla in the Europa League Round of 16.

Sparta are currently third in the Czech league, seven points behind leaders Slavia Prague and Viktoria Plzen.

The Czech Republic’s top-flight does not include an automatic qualification spot for the Champions League; the top two teams instead go into the Champions League qualifiers.
