Manuel Lanzini has decided to make a sizable donation to a local community service after his Christmas party indiscretion.
A photo emerged of the Hammer with three Spurs players, Erik Lamela, Giovani Lo Celso, and Sergio Reguilon, and their families breaking social distancing rules over the festive period.
Two of the players photographed with Lanzini later tested positive but the Irons star tested negative in the days after the party,
Manu apologised as soon as the photo was published but went one step further this evening.
The playmaker told his Twitter followers: “I thought a lot about my actions at Christmas and I know I cannot change what happened but I’ve spoken to the club and the manager and want something good to come of it.
I’ve been at West Ham a long time so I know what the community means to the club and want to give back to a cause that matters to all of us, our community and our fans. I will be making a donation to a great cause in the Newham Foodbank and I hope this can help them during a difficult time.”
It’s a classy message from the Iron, who had played 17 minutes against Everton in the Premier League before the photo emerged.
It remains to be seen if he could be back in action on Monday, when the Irons take on Stockport County in the FA Cup, but he should be back in the good books of some supporters after his thoroughly decent post.
Young man. Made a huge mistake. Don’t do that again – or anything like it. Surprised that West Ham United don’t have a bunch of people employed to help new signings settle in and advise on expected levels of behaviour for WHU employees. I understand that these guys are very intelligent, discrete and ‘rich’. With the West Ham job should come an expectation of good behaviour. Guidance on what may be acceptable should be given to all employees in regular formal education sessions. If the club already provide this pastoral and ethical care, then they have failed with Lanzini in this instance. I have to agree that this contrite statement and subsequent ‘donation’ should not be termed as ‘classy’.
But this one indiscretion doesn’t make Manu a bad man. Just learn from your mistake – know beforehand that what you propose is wrong and don’t do it. Don’t beat yourself up with this. Surround yourself with people with better judgement. You don’t party on your own!!

Sorry sean but not many people will think it’s a classy move.
Lanzini must have known he was breaking the rules and like so many only apologised when he got caught out.
when the cases and deaths are going through the roof especially in london and people are worried about their jobs this sticks in one’s throat.
Sean you should look at that headline again and maybe think it wasn’t a classy move after all?
Sorry – I don’t agree with this one, either. All that tattoo ink must have interfered with Lanzini’s brainbox, if he thinks that West Ham fans – many of whom will be making enormous personal sacrifices during Covid – can be fobbed off by a cheap, transparent PR stunt. Let’s not forget that Lanzini has been, at best, a mediocre performer for West Ham over the last few seasons, during which time he’s been paid sums of money that ex-players that have made much, much bigger contributions to the history of our club could only have dreamed of earning. He’s behaved badly very publicly after underperforming for several seasons. Let’s not let allow a PR stunt, which his agent probably suggested he involve himself in, make us forget the facts.
For once, you’re off beam with this one, Sean. Nothing about this is classy.
I cannot see why his level of performance should come into it.Or the level of wages our previous players achieved. Would he have been ok if he had been MOM every game or only earned a tiny wage? In the last 2 years that you mention, he has missed well over 300 days with serious injuries, recieved while playing for us.None of us can say what’s prompted this gesture. I choose to accept that he realises he’s done wrong and wants to atone, for no other reason than he has said so and I have no reason to doubt his word. You choose to believe he is insincere for no reason other than vague suspicions of cynicism. It was all done and dusted. He didn’t have to resurrect the subject at all. He didn’t have to donate anything. The fact that he has, I think, speaks volumes for him. Show me a man that hasn’t made a mistake and I’ll show you a liar.
Too right – I’m completed jaded by, and now very, very cynical about, players over the years coming to West Ham being massively overpaid and underperforming. But you’re right, it shouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference whether he’s underperforming or MOTM every week. Unfortunately for us, he’s very much in the former category.
My main point ought to have been that we don’t have any evidence about Lanzini’s true motivations for making the donation. Food banks have been around for years. Odd that Lanzini should choose the immediate aftermath of a very public Covid transgression to make a very public donation. Just sayin’. You’re right, though, he didn’t have to do it.
Sorry don’t agree, he put the whole squad at risk. It’s a pr stunt, nothing classy about it.
