The owners of London stadium have kicked off a legal fight with top London law firm Allen & Overy over its drafting of West Ham United’s 99-year lease agreement.
The stadium’s public sector owners – London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and E20 Stadium LLP – have brought a professional negligence suit against the City law firm for its work on the 2013 concession agreement with West Ham, which has been the subject of a series of expensive lawsuits according to Financial News London
Last year London Stadium owners E20 confirmed that legal disputes with West Ham cost them nearly £4.4m in external legal costs.
A Freedom Information request to E20 owned by LLDC admitted they spent £3.1m on their dispute over stadium capacity which was settled out of court in November 2018. They also spent another £582,000 in legal fees for the Expert Determination they lost and £710,000 in other disputes with West Ham United.
The stadium owners also lost a previous legal case against Vinci and tried to sue their previous legal advisors which also failed.
Allen & Overy are one of the biggest and respected law firms in the UK and will not take this lying down and are almost certain to rigorously defend it. It could take up to five years and the only winners are likely to be lawyers being funded more taxpayer money.
The lawsuit has nothing to do with West Ham United and there is no legal or financial consequence for the Hammers whatever the outcome.
