West Ham United fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Julen Lopetegui, hoping for a new era of attacking, possession-based football compared to David Moyes’ defensive approach. While some argue Lopetegui’s style isn’t much different, there’s one player who could find redemption under the Spaniard: Nayef Aguerd.
Many West Ham players, including fringe players ignored by Moyes will be looking to impress under Lopetegui. One such player is Aguerd, who has struggled mightily since his £28 million arrival from Rennes in 2022.
Lopetegui’s interest in Aguerd before his West Ham move is intriguing. While Aguerd has been a poor fit for the Hammers’ style, Lopetegui’s preference for a high defensive line and possession-based play could be a game-changer.
Whether Aguerd blossoms under Lopetegui remains to be seen. His struggles in the Premier League raise doubts. However, one thing is certain: Aguerd will have a better chance to prove himself under Lopetegui’s system compared to Moyes’ conservative tactics.
Overall, Lopetegui’s arrival offers a glimmer of hope for Aguerd. While his past performances haven’t been inspiring, a change in style and philosophy could unlock his potential. West Ham fans will be watching Aguerd closely to see if he can turn things around under the new manager.
I reckon we should give him a chance. Honestly I really like him, he’s quick, powerful and has a bullet pass. In a more attacking side he could be MEGA.. Just my opinion though.
He’s a ball playing defender in a team that doesn’t play with the ball.
In a team that has more possession I would expect him to be a better fit.
That said, Morocco often surrender possession, albeit not intentionally like Moyesball, and he looks better for them.
I watched him playing for his country and he was Brilliant
Any central defender playing alongside Kurt Zouma will struggle. Personally I think Aguerd is an excellent player.
