Lyon make £15M Benrahma bid and await Hammers response

Lyon has tabled an offer of approximately £15 million with add-ons for West Ham United winger Said Benrahma, as reported by Athletic journalist David Ornstein. Although West Ham has not yet accepted the offer, Lyon believes that Benrahma is eager to make a move to the Ligue 1 side.

This proposed deal appears to be a reasonable return for the player, considering his recent decline in form. Benrahma played a crucial role as one of the goal scoring heroes in our Europa Conference League final victory last season. However, he has struggled for regular appearances in the current campaign and has been ineffective when given the chance.

In the 2023-24 season, Benrahma has only accumulated 615 minutes in the Premier League, starting just six matches and contributing zero goals and one assist in all competitions. His most recent outing for West Ham ended in a 1-0 loss to Bristol City in an FA Cup third-round replay, where he received a red card.

Lyon make £15M Benrahma bid and the player is believed to be keen on the move.

Benrahma never truly convinced Moyes

Regarding Benrahma’s dismissal, manager David Moyes commented, “It made it much more difficult, that’s for sure. It made it much harder, and we were a goal down already at that point. I’ve had a look at it, and I don’t think we can have any complaints. I wasn’t sure about the tackle on him… that might have been questionable.” In all fairness to the player, he has never really looked suited to the managers style of football. I have always suspected that Moyes never truly trusted the player and believe a move is best for all parties.

Benni joined West Ham from Brentford on a permanent deal in 2021, has a contract with the club until 2026. Lyon currently sits 16th in Ligue 1, enduring a disappointing campaign and holding a precarious one-point lead over the relegation zone, occupying the league’s relegation play-off spot. If Benrahma does join Lyon he’s certainly recognise former opponent Gift Orban who joint recently from Gent. The striker has been heavily criticised following a rant towards journalists which caused the French press to question the players temperament for a relegation battle.

West Ham have enjoyed a good relationship with the French club having signed Lucas Paqueta from them in 2022. Therefore I can’t see too many glitches with this particular deal.
