Moyes admits huge Hammers worry

David Moyes has admitted that West Ham’s squad is too thin.

The club were beaten by Southampton in the FA Cup in midweek and are now preparing to take on Liverpool at Anfield this weekend.

That game should have a huge bearing on both the top four race and the title race, with the Hammers fifth and the Reds second.

Still, Moyes has admitted that the club would have liked to have made new signings in the January window and he accepts that the squad does need new blood, after failing to bring anyone in during the winter.

However, the boss remains defiant in the face of potential criticism over a lack of transfer activity, insisting that the club really did try to bring new players in, only to see numerous bids fail, including moves for the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Darwin Nunez.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Liverpool, as per Football.London, the Irons manager said, when asked if he felt questions over squad depth were legitimate: “Yes, quite rightly so. We could do with a stronger squad, we would have liked to have made more signings but every time we get asked those questions I feel like saying ‘Do you think we did not try? Do you think that we did not make offers? Do you think we do not know we need a bigger squad?’

“But I keep saying Rome wasn’t built in a day. I want to continue building West Ham. The room West Ham has for future development and the potential to get better and those things you just mentioned are two of them. We are aware of that and I think it is a good sign we are still doing okay and people are mentioning our squad depth and the players we have got.”
