Moyes on that Dawson red card

|

David Moyes insists that Craig Dawson should have done better when he challenged Romelu Lukaku prior to his red card against Chelsea.

The defender was sensational during his time on the pitch but he ruined his own display with a silly challenge on the Belgium international, pulling him back as he sprinted through on goal.

A penalty was awarded and, after a VAR review, Dawson was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Jorginho went on to miss the penalty but Chelsea would not be denied after gaining the numerical advantage, as Christian Pulisic scored the winning goal in the final minute.

And Moyes felt that the defender made a mistake by being left the wrong side of Lukaku before bringing him down.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Irons boss said: “Craig Dawson’s played really well for us so far this season.

“I thought he should have done better in the incident – I thought he should have got to the ball first, and gave the referee a decision to make – but ultimately he’s played so well for us.

“It’s another difficult one, because we’re without another player [against Arsenal next weekend] because of the red card.

“When the penalty was saved, I was thinking we had a real chance. We were down to ten men – could we see it out for the last few minutes?

“We did well enough, but not enough to warrant much more. Overall, a draw would have been a good result for us.”

Dawson will now be suspended for the next three games, although the red card won’t affect his status in the Europa League.
