Moyes rightly lays down transfer window law

|

David Moyes’ revelation that he – and only he is in charge of transfers – is a hugely welcome West Ham development we prepare to start “ducking and diving” this summer.

That’s not our expression but comes from a CandH insider who admits there will have to be a big change in the way things are approached  given the Covid19 situation

However, that seems okay with Moyes who speaking publicly made it clear that he wouldn’t be doing the job unless he had the full and final say on transfers.

And quite rightly he added that managers lose their jobs by their decisions and, although there was no implication involved, it’s clear he doesn’t intend losing it at anybody’s else’s hands or decision-making process.

It was something that needed saying for prior to the Pellegrini fiasco when the board took their hands off the whole situation it was well known they were having an input on targets.

Moyes’ statement makes it clear that he wants the same scenario as the departed Chilean is understandable and correct.

The club seriously needed a manager who knows the game inside out and backwards as we go into what is bound to be a Championship target-directed summer.

David Sullivan will now resume a role to complete transfer deals once they have been identified by David Moyes but the 57-year-old boss is determined to have scouted every target whilst continuing to do so ahead of the winter and 2021 windows and intends to ensure that his choice of players is final.

I’m not 100% sure of this idea of buying young championship players when we’ve failed before with them. To name but three, Hugill, Frederick’s, Byram. I know we have success with Bowen, but we have to be really careful or it could blow up in our faces. Even with experienced players from the championship would be risky. Look at Andre Ayew a total flop with us, but he’s got about 18 goals this season for Swansea.

And success with Cresswell (like it or not, he’s been first choice left back for several years and managed to play for England during that time), Bowen, and Antonio. I’m sure we’ve had other successes in the past. There’s always risk – buying from abroad doesn’t come without risks, we’ve had lots of failures there too. And buying young established premier league players is way above what we can afford at the moment.

Antonio and Cresswell also brought in from the championship, another look around the prem and you can add Maddison and the majority of sheff utd’s team and players like eze and Benrahma, Watkins that supporters are crying out for us to sign. So many good players in that league. Most have been calling for our youth team to be played and they have been playing league 1 level in the u23’s

Surely, unless clubs are buying at the very top of the market, which only Champions League teams can afford to do, it’s much riskier to bring players in from overseas than it is to bring them in from the Championship. Last time I looked, West Ham were far from being a Champions League club, and so I applaud Moyes for his approach. Let’s not forget, it’s an approach that served him pretty well during his successful 10 years or so at Everton, during which time he picked up an average of four points per season from us!

We don’t have much luck in the transfer window wherever we buy player’s from.

Good to know that Moyes probably learnt a harsh lesson the first time around which hasn’t been forgotten. He knows the nature of the beast that he is dealing and funds permitting the in’s and out’s at this club will hopefully make more sense going forward.

So David Sullivan is in charge of actually completing the transfers then. Please forgive me if I’m not ecstatic with the bit of news .
