“We’re all doomed” talk is such nonsense

|

Panic1There’s an air of panic and doom mongering around West Ham at the moment.

The honeymoon days of a new manager and supposed new era under Slaven Bilic in our last season at the Boleyn Ground seem long behind us and a familiar mood of negativity has descended once again on our great club.

It seems to be the West Ham ‘fans’ way. Mark Lawrenson and Harry Redknapp have added fuel to the fire to express concern for West Ham this season.

Maybe I am alone in this view, but I believe we can survive the first half of the season without any further additions before the transfer deadline closes at 6pm on Tuesday.

Sure I would like new additions but they need to quality additions not ageing ‘has beens’, mercenaries or sub standard loan deals in my view. Maybe, I am deluded but we have seen it all before so I don’t why we are surprised.

DontpanicI think Tony Cottee is correct on Emmanuel Adebayor, at best we will get good six months from him and I am not at all convinced he is worth the reported £100,000 per week we would need to pay Spurs for his services.

Although Alex Song is  clearly quality and showed it in the first half of last season, is it worth paying him  a reported£85,000 per week  when he is unlikely to play until November and may take longer to get back to his best form?

It won’t be the end of the world if we stick with our current squad until January. As David Gold highlighted yesterday,  Carroll and Zarate are due to return soon. Valencia should return early next year and we hope Sakho will stay fit and out  of other trouble.

We can always spend big in January if things are going pear shaped but I think last minute desperate buying of strikers and wingers is misguided and a waste of of limited resources.

Do I think we will relegated this season? NO I do NOT!   Come on you Irons!  Don’t Panic! Keep the faith!

Why do you think Sean the tight wads will spend big in January ?never have before,
I don’t think that many are Panicking there is a lot of trouble making by BFS fans,
We have started to remove the dead wood so that opens up the chance for the youngsters,
The biggest problem is the Smoke being blown up our back sides by the owners,
All we want is Honesty if they are not going to spend money come out and say it,
Don’t keep putting in low bids no one is going to agree to,
We are not kids we can take it and get behind the team we have,

  • bunny67 says:

Sorry Sean I think you need to get your head out of the sand.
Our form since December has been relegation form and squad is significantly weaker since then. Only 2 (maybe 3) players have come in to a squad that was already weak.
The reality is for whatever reason, the owners are doing this on the cheap despite all their PR and I can’t understand the logic for this, given the risks if we go down.

At present the similarities to grant season is remarkable and scary.
We need 6 players that can be added to current first team squad that improves it. I think we will be lucky to get 1 that is better than what we have or lost in summer.

    • Blind Hammer says:

I think Bilic was always a gamble and was surprised the owners took such a risk this season. I hope fervently Bilic finds his feet as he seems a thoroughly nice and professional man. . I am not panicking yet and do not expect points against either Liverpool or Manchester City but if we see a repeat of the shambles against Leicester and Bournemouth in the Newcastle and Norwich games there will be undoubted cause for concern about whether Bilic is in his depth. We were not unlucky against either Leicester or Bournemouth and a significant step up in performance is needed soon. If that level of ill discipline and defensive disaaray continues we will be effectively relegated before the Januaery window.

  • stelhammer says:

    Sean… You are spot on

It would really be good to get at least one player – perhaps someone like Moses who might be able to play wide and upfront

But, I also think we have a strong squad, despite recently losing players.

Bilic may want to make peace with Amalfitano as I think he can still offer West Ham something.

The new players are beginning to settle in. Let’s not forget it takes a little while to get accustomed to the Premier League.

Zarate has shown promise this season. Payet, Obiang and Ogbonna all look more than decent. let’s hope Carroll can give us a fit run of form till the end of the season.

But, as you say, I reckon we can hold out till Christmas before making decent additions as opposed to desperate loan deals for the wrong players.

I have a feeling that we will get Hernandez in the January transfer window and it would be a good bit of business if we wait till he becomes available. Van Gaal will have decided on Hernandez by then. So, why fill the squad with the wrong players when the right ones will be available later in the year?

    • bunny67 says:

So you think we have a strong squad, but zarate (who at best is a 20 minutes sub) is showing promise. You hope Carroll stays fit for rest of season even though he hasn’t managed a qtr of a season in the 3 he has been here and you hope bilic makes peace with amafatino even though he hasn’t featured….but you still think we have a squad that you think is strong??

      • stelhammer says:

Yes I reckon we have a strong enough squad to get us through to Christmas. Then, at that stage the situation can be re-assessed.

I’ve seen Zarate play a number of times already this season and he has run his socks off for the team. We can get a decent 65/70 minutes out of him. And, he’s creative. So, credit where credit is due to him

No, I don’t think Carroll will be fit for the rest of the season because he will undoubtably get injured again. But, if he is really due back within the next few weeks, we all hope he will stay injury free for at least 4 months till the transfer window opens

No, I don’t think Amalfitano will come back from being left out. But, let’s see.

And, yes… I think we have stronger players than this time last season

Out: Nolan (good captain but too old), Maiga (will he be missed?), Downing (shame to see him go), and a whole pile of fringe players
In: Obiang, Ogbonna, Payet, Lanzini, Samuelson

All are better than what we’ve lost. So, yes, I say it’s a stronger squad

  • Michael Miller says:

If I want to panic – I’ll panic!!

Two disastrous home performances against Leicester and Bournemouth came as a real shock – West Ham’s defending in both games was pathetic – they didn’t play like a team – it was disastrous!

The Squad looks thin and the attack in particular looks threadbare – waiting for Andy Carroll to get fit seems a very dodgy plan – time to panic!

  • Bob The Iron says:

Lmao,Sean is friend of the board,he is just spinning some Gold/Sully love.Of course we need a winger of decent quality. What the hell makes you think they will spend in Jan if they aint now.Is turbo gob Sulky going to get the Krays to start an extortion racket for him so we have readies in January, lol

  • slaven a laugh says:

Slav is fond of saying there is no need to panic. He said it in his latest evening standard news column as well. (The one that must come with the job as it used to be written by allardyce). I kind of agree in that I would rather we didn’t buy expensive has beens that will have no future value. as businessmen. I would have thought the faves would understand that last year the talk was all about buying young hungry upcoming players and we had a great transfer window. Everyone was happy. This year we seem to have gone back to buying the has beens on huge wages. Are we really that desperate. I would rather see a young lad like Samuelson have a go to be quite honest.

    • Ironworks says:

Agree mate, would love to Samuelson and Lanzini getting a run, sure they’re both light and wiry and will probably get roughed up a bit but thats all part of adjusting to the prem,

  • nixon01 says:

“We can always spend big in January” I find this a very odd statement to make, firstly as DS and DG have never shown any real desire to “spend big” given their general propensity to ‘find a deal’ and do things on the cheap. Secondly we are always told how tough it is to buy in January, especially any genuine quality, and this is a perspective often touted by Sully himself as well.

My worry is how we have approached this transfer window; we had clear areas that needed strengthening off the back of last season and we still haven’t addressed all of them this late into the transfer window. Mostly a goalscorer and 2 quality wide players. This is exacerbated by Jarvis and Amalfitano not being in the clubs plans.
The overall squad looks light and we don’t have a great deal of options going through a full season. There are no excuses for leaving things this late and getting themselves and the fans into any panic mode.

This feels like typical DS & DG, doing things as cheap as possible, whilst using every media source available to spout on how “active” they are being. Since the start of summer DG has repeatedly been on twitter telling the fans about ‘the return of AC’, and this seems the plan all along, relying on the injury prone “record signing”. An insanely naive approach from the owners.

  • IronsEssex says:

All our forwards are injury prone so realistically we do need another as back up or even as a main, and we really need a winger or at least bring Amalfitano back in the squad. Some don’t like him I think he’s alrite – just my opinion.
I disagree with this song situation, I thought we were planning for the future and building things up? Even if he’s injured now and not up to his best he’s still going to be vital towards the end of the season when everything really matters. So he’s injured or not at best for 3/4 of a season, that doesn’t mean he won’t smash it for the last 1/4 and 2 seasons if we did get him on a 3 year contract. I’m not panicking, I just think we’re in for a normal West Ham season lol.
    COME ON YOUUU IRRONNNNSSSS

  • gas says:

agreed, although if zaza were to turn up I wouldn’t complain. the rest of the linked strikers appear to offer little but bodies and names. wish amalfatano was allowed out of detention his bite, width & moves are wanted

    • MyOldMan says:

Perhaps its a case of Morgan throwing his toys out of the pram after Slav laid down the law as he has history of other incidents at previous clubs in France. Shame though as I agree we could do with him atm. Heres hoping things can get sorted as it doesn’t look like he is going anywhere this window so would be a waste to see him not reintegrated.

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

I agree to some extent Sean on signing quality players rather than some of the junk we are being linked with, we need a defensive midfielder that can pass, wide player(s) and a 20 goal a season striker or at least a 15 goal a season one. If we can get them on loan then thats fine if not some money needs to be invested or we need to change our formation because we are wide open down the flanks with the current personnel, which doesn’t play to our full backs strengths and exposes their deficiencies. I also agree we aren’t going to get relegated if we don’t reinforce the squad but it will make for some tricky situations and our best option will be to park the bus in many games and hope to nick the odd goal. I have faith in Slav to do what it takes to make the most of whatever we have COYI !!!

  • bubs says:

Just looked at the 2 team line ups and not worried, keepers on par defences I would prefer ours, coutino against Payet score draw,Kouyate against Milner Draw,Noble and Obiang less affective but the main Problem Sakho against 2 Class Forwards,
We can win this if we don’t give away cheap ball
    Bench looks light

  • WestGoaHam says:

Where are the gobsh!te doom mongers now??? Tossers!

  • dden says:

Can’t help noticing that the habitual whingers on this site are a bit quite after todays game at Anfield and the end of 51 years of torment at Anfield (including the 1-0 defeat in the FA Cup tie from the 62-3 season when Liverpool were outplayed but won totally against the run of play (read Jack Burkett’s biography). I suspect many teams will have inconsistent results this season (our team not being the least). I did admire what Big Sam achieved in this first two seasons and, of course, in the first half of last season but the truth is probably that our results and position in the league over the last two seasons probably reflect the collective merits of the squad overall. I have no doubt t, however, that it was time for BFS to go and think that Slaven must be given time so hat we can see what happens when our injuries allow.

  • SMUG COMMENT ALERT: See I told you not to panic! lol

  • Radai Lama says:

Not all of us were Sean, lol, but i certainly didnt expect the result today though thats for sure;)

  • stelhammer says:

I’m going to gloat only because I got challenged earlier about my views on the strength of the squad

Every player had a great game today. To shut out Liverpool and allow them only one shot on target at their own ground wasn’t luck, it was a special team performance from our beloved West Ham

I said we have a strong squad and I stick to that notion. Lanzini showed what he’s capable of, and Cresswell made up for his nightmare defending of last week

We still have Carroll, Zarate, Valencia, to come back from injury

Jenkinson will improve when he’s because he simply can’t play as bad as he did last week

We also have Poyet to return from his loan spell

So, things aren’t quite as doom and gloom as people would like us to think

    Great result today… COYFI
