What did the no votes want ? Him to leave and play against us and bring back Nolegs to play for a couple of years,
Wonder how many could not make up their minds ?

  • Although I am in the Yes camp I do understand why some will question the need to offer a new deal after just 7 months of a five year deal with a one year option.

In reality we are taking that one year option early in return for around £6.5m of wages and bonuses.

Some might question whether that £6.5m could have been better spent as he was already contracted for another 4.5 years with no easy exit.

I think in reality it is a sign of massive goodwill towards Payet and also a statement of intent that West Ham is no longer the kind of selling club it used to be.
Of course Payet may still get sold for ridiculous money.
But this early and slightly unnecessary move made sure that Payet will feel like the main man at West Ham, the guy the team is built around, the one leading us out into our new era at the OS.
It’s what the Americans would call a franchise signing. In Payet we now have our anchor for the next two years at least and even if he may get sold eventually we will by that time be in a much better position as a team and a club to deal with it.

For me it was a yes in order to reflect the exceptional performance of the player and his value to the team, I think he is a humble guy and his words that he understands that the team will build gradually over the coming years while his best years are spent during our transition and as a key part of it. In other words he is choosing to spend his best years in a project when he could easilly to go to a fully fledged Champions League team, much like Di Canio when he turned Man U down because he loved our club and supporters, I see this as much the same type of person so am happy to see him rewarded for that.

    • You raise a good point there. Would we ever have given a pay rise to Di Canio after 7 months? Did Mooro, Hurst or Peters get a pay rise after they won the world cup single handedly?

      Times have changed!

Indeed Sean, I think DiCanio did get a higher paid contract eventually and when we took him it was as you will remember after this moment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9CLiDqYfLc when a lot of clubs wouldn’t touch him. Thankfully for us Harry worked his magic and then Paolo worked his for us for many seasons. As for the World Cup stars I cannot find any evidence that they did get improved contracts and if they did the club would still have been laughing all the way to the bank. On a cynical note, it could be suggested that next season being our first in the OS if we are a European side, with tremendous assetts on the field secured to long term contracts, we would be an even more attractive proposition for investment 😉

I don’t like being in the minority but I can’t see the point in giving him a new contract – he’s already only 7 months into a five-year deal – and at nearly 29 years of age it doesn’t really make sense.

Another point, if a Chinese Club came in for him offering silly money would this new Contract make any difference – I know what I think!

Having said that, I like Payet he’s a fine player, he tends to overplay a bit, but nevertheless is the best player in our present team.
