Pundits puzzled by Tomkins exit

|

James Tomkins of West Ham United celebrates scoring the winning goalPaul Scholes and Steve Macmanaman have poured salt into red raw West Ham wounds following the West Brom defeat.

Tomkins scored in the 4-1 defeat of Stoke City and the two BT pundits were quick to qustion Slaven Bilic’s decision to sell the Irons academy product t Crystal Palace for £10 million.

Scholes said: “I also think that the sale of Tomkins was a strange one. Okay, he’s probably not a top drawer defender, but I think he was very settled in their defence and he’s a decent defender.

“I thought just selling him for £10 million to Crystal Palace was a strange move. Defensively, that’s where the problems are, and I think him going was a part of it.”

McManaman said: “It’s actually hard to find good central-defensive partnerships. I know Winston Reid and James Collins are playing, but like Scholesy said, Tomkins has played loads of times.

“Just to get rid of him – I have no idea what the finances are, if there are any problems behind the scenes. But why don’t you just keep him? Why sell him for £10 million. £10 million is by the by now.”

You should get a job as a journalist Hugh you are very good with the juicy wording lol.Oh yeah you were one wasn’t you 🙂

I have already given my views on Tomkins, average player who was always bigged up due to his ties to the club.If he had come from some like Birmingham or Hull fans would have been far less complimentary of him over the last few seasons.

  • RickHammer says:

Forget Tomkins,we had just as many dodgy defences with him in them as well over the years. If three international defenders like Oggy,Collins & Reid can’t sort themselves out then no one else can help them.It will come good.Im hopeful Arbeloa can lead them if he plays as our rb.I heard Big Nose Thompson say he was very good at Liverpool organising the back four, lets hope he can do the same for us.

    • sleepswithdafishes says:

I think Arbeloa will play on Wednesday.

A friend of mine lives in Espana,he says though he didn’t play much for Madrid he was still very reliable & solid when called upon.Lets hope he can bring a pacifying wise head to proceedings.
I saw Thompson talking about him,he did indeed praise him highly.

Try to find the same opinion from these tossers before today. Scholes and Macmanaman just wise after the event as usual.

Mcmanamananaman talks a load of pony.He drives me nuts when he does our matches
I liked Tonks but I wasn’t blind to his limitations,he had some stinkers. It was nice of McManamamamananman to call him a decent defender though, high praise coming from that plonker

  • NESTACRES says:

Scholes would be we better off passing comment on why his club spent £100m on a player with no goals and no assists so far this season.

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

As said by others Tompkins was a decent defender, Tompkins wanted first team football and not at right back, we let him go very early in the window, at that time although Slav was talking up Antonio they were still looking to bring in a top rb but couldn’t. If anyone offered any club £10m for a player like Tompkins they would rip your arm off and get the deal done, it was great business. Hugh this season you seem to have upped the sensationalist wording of your headlines, I understand you have to get publicity for the site but in my opinion one of the things that attracted me to the site in the first place, was the down to earth unbiased reporting, at the moment it seems to me anyway like everything is negative and a lot of repeating of the same messages. Sometimes less is more, speaking personally you do a great job of creating a lot of posts but if it is a quiet news day, as a reader of the site I would be happy with less articles, rather than reading the same thing 5 different but similar ways 🙂

I have tried the 5 different but similiar ways with the missus no32,it doesn’t work she still moans all the time 😀
It is always the same, the player that ain’t about or aint playing always become better in fans views while not selected or sold on.I have seen many want Burke in the team & he shouldnt have been loaned out but the first mistake he makes we will hear he is too defensively naive, not up to the task at the moment, needs to gain more experience on loan.It is like frigging magic roundabouts,we have already had it with the other Reece.

up our game!!! that’s all we need to do!! I thought second half against WBA, we started too like last seasons performances, just stick with that attitude ,and we should be fine?

  • Bob says:

Johnboy has returned has he? ( Smile)

  • jimbo says:

Think we can all have a bit of a giggle at this one! Tonks was average and no better or worse than what we’ve got. So getting 10m for him was excellent business. The fact that defensively we are struggling this season isn’t down to the loss of Tonks. Anymore so than the loss of Song has left a gap in midfield. The real issue is those we’ve brought in aren’t any better and we’ve supposedly spent 60m!

  • Dunlopilo says:

Tonks was very pleasant and approachable , in my opinion. Met him very briefly once with my son and he was very nice.

On a football level, I think the club was very honest with him, and told him what the plan was. Tomkins had great matches but also disappointing ones.Could we have sold Ginge ? Not for 10 million. Reid ? not planned for now. Ogbonna ? Just got here. So who was left ? And this was done with the purpose of opening some space for Oxford, who needed a proof of confidence and vision for the future. We need Oxford to improve and become the cornerstone of the defence and the club. That is why Tomkins was sold.

    • Bob says:

Yeah that is it in a nutshell Dunlopilo.Coupled with the fact that Tomkins seemed to want more regular football.I was astonished we got £10m for him if I am honest.I have seen some think we got turned over by CP but I don’t see it at all.

    • oldgit says:

That appeared to be the idea. Strange that Bilic isn’t playing Reece based on that.
