Report: Hammers agree Fernandes deal

|

West Ham are currently being reported as having agreed a deal in principle for Gedson Fernandes.

Sky Sports have reported a deal has been agreed for the Benfica midfielder to join on an 18 month loan with no option or obligation to buy.

The Benfica board were due to meet this morning to discuss offers for the player and it seems as though a possible outcome has been reached.

There may be some more twists and turns to this one of course following reports that Chelsea were ready to do a deal which topped ours and included a £55 million option to buy.

However, we have learned since then that Frank Lampard – having had the transfer restrictions lifted at the club – is more interested in signing a defender and striker.

Benfica are keen for the player to get regular Premier League football after falling out of favour with the manager in Portugal and West Ham’s need in the midfield is greater than Chelsea’s.

Never seen him play so not sure what to expect here.Is he an attacking midfielder? a holding or box to box player?.We have known all season this is the area causing concern.Obviously Benfica will expect him to get straight into our 1st team otherwise whats the point of loaning him out to us.We have Portugese players in Silva,Cardoso and Dju but none have broken into the 1st team as yet Personally i would love to see Sander Berg arrive as he knows the club from his time with us and is a big physical player.Interesting to see how this pans out but personally i think we will be looking to add someone else in midfield even if this deal goes through.

I think he is a central Mid. I’m also leaning towards Sander Berge. I think he will be a better fit and being taller he can drop into defence for corners and FKs against.

Was Sander Berg on our books? He does sound the type of player we need if available. What would the deal be for him?

Hi Hugh what is your view about having no option to buy. What if he turns out to be a next level signing . His value will shoot up to a level where we couldn’t afford him . I know there’s a risk he might flop but an option to buy would have been low risk don’t you think.

    • There’s been a lot of rubbish written so far re Chelsea who wants a defender and stroiker not midfielder. Moyes described him as one foe the future yet here are people saying he’s God’s gift. Nope don’t think so Mark

Be a shame if there’s no option to buy as is being reported. If he’s a success it seems pretty inevitable that we’d get outgunned when trying to buy him, so he would in all likelihood just be a relatively short term fix in centre mid.
