Star’s age and injury record dictated Hammers bid

West Ham’s bid for Kalvin Phillips was considered very low at £50 million by some people – notably Simon Jordan on talkSPORT.

However, a look at Phillips’ age and injury track record over the last couple of season had a lot to do with that when the Irons went in for the midfielder.

The club also believed that as a good pal of Declan’s, who works well with him, it might be an encouragement for the captain to sign a new deal!

Jordan had hammered the Irons attempt but the reasoning behind the bid was calculated on that injury record and age.

The Hammers had attempted to do the deal earlier than the last day but given the new David Moyes leak proof approach to transfer windows didn’t give news of it until close to the end of deadline day.

The Hammers are aware that with Leeds heading into the relegation area and a drop from the 15th position possible it was worth trying to get the England international.

But that also worked against us with the Whites deciding they needed the player probably for that very reason although he has been missing for nine games with a hamstring injury and last appeared on December.

They will no doubt try again in the summer but other clubs are now set to join the chase.

    Am I missing something here?
Offering £50mil. for a player whose role is in the strongest position within West Ham squad, yet not bringing in a main Striker or rotational (Left-sided/footed) Centre back …

    Someones not being very up-front…

    • Yeah what u missed was that we reported a bid had been made for a player in a position which wasn’t required right now and here, that they hope by signing him it may help to keep Declan

I generally give the transfer speculation a wide berth, because that is all it is, speculation until officially confirmed.

My issue is generally with the opinions of media personalities, like Jordan, whose rancid opinions are given undeserved airtime. Unfortunately gone are the days when sensible, knowledgeable and measured views were broadcast.

There is a good reason why Jordan is no longer chairman of a football club.

Sorry, but I disagree with your bias towards Jordan’s comments. He’s actually very balanced and measured and knowledgeable. He makes salient points that make complete sense.

The problem, is that few people actually bother to listen to everything before taking the headline snippets and going off on their own rant, resulting in unbalanced views spread around pub gardens by angry, self-proclaimed experts with half the story… Typical these days across all walks of media (be it broadcast, newspaper or social).

Jim White is there to incite a response – that’s his job.

The reason he doesn’t run a club is because he doesn’t want to…
